Bimetallic Gold-Silver Nanostructures Drive Low Overpotentials for Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction

Joon Woo Park et al.

Summary: Alloy formation is an advanced approach that improves properties beyond what monoelements can achieve. The Au-Ag alloy nanostructures exhibit prominent catalytic properties in the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (eCO(2)RR), with superior performance compared to pure elements. The optimal configuration of the active intermediate *COOH involves a bidentate coordination structure where C binds to Au and O binds to Ag, in agreement with experimental results. This study offers new insights into the synergistic roles of Au and Ag in eCO(2)RR and provides a direction for rational design of bimetallic catalysts.

Degradation study on tin- and bismuth-based gas-diffusion electrodes during electrochemical CO2 reduction in highly alkaline media

Fabian Bienen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of tin-based gas-diffusion electrodes (GDE) and a promising Bi2O3 GDE in highly alkaline media during electrochemical CO2 reduction, revealing that the SnO2 catalyst dissolves and may be partially redeposited, while the Bi2O3 GDE remains stable due to the redeposition of metallic Bi during CO2 conversion. The deterioration of electrode performance correlates with the differential double layer capacitance and the rate of increase for hydrogen FE, indicating the superposition of different degradation mechanisms.

Efficiency and selectivity of CO2 reduction to CO on gold gas diffusion electrodes in acidic media

Mariana C. O. Monteiro et al.

Summary: Large scale CO2 electrolysis to produce CO has traditionally been done in neutral and alkaline media, but recent research shows that it can also be achieved in acidic media with higher efficiency. Operating at current densities up to 200 mA cm(-2), CO faradaic efficiencies between 80-90% were obtained in sulfate electrolyte, representing a step towards the application of acidic electrolyzers for CO2 electroreduction.

Copper-indium hydroxides derived electrocatalysts with tunable compositions for electrochemical CO2 reduction

Qixian Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, composition tunable Cu-In hydroxides were fabricated, and the composition effect on the selectivity of CO2 reduction products was investigated. It was found that increasing In content in the electrocatalysts shifted the selectivity from CO to formate. Furthermore, Cu-rich electrocatalysts mainly produced CO, while In-rich electrocatalysts selectively produced formate with high Faradaic efficiencies.

The role of ligands in atomically precise nanocluster-catalyzed CO2 electrochemical reduction

Site Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different protecting ligands on Au nanoclusters in the CO2 electrochemical reduction reaction, revealing that the sulfur site acts as the active site supporting CO selectivity, while the selenium site shows a higher tendency for hydrogen evolution. Energy calculations demonstrate that the sulfur-based Au nanocluster exhibits lower energy penalties for key reaction steps, leading to improved catalytic performance.
