Seamless downscaling of the ESA CCI soil moisture data at the daily scale with MODIS land products

Wei Zhao et al.

Summary: Spatial downscaling is essential in regional applications of coarse-resolution passive microwave surface soil moisture (SSM) products. The proposed improved downscaling method utilizes MODIS Terra daily land surface temperature (LST) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) products as auxiliary data, resulting in a seamless downscaled SSM series at 1km spatial resolution for the Iberian Peninsula. The downscaled SSM data exhibits strong temporal correlation with precipitation events and good performance compared to alternative SSM datasets, confirming the efficiency and convenience of the proposed method in generating high-resolution SSM data.

Continuous evaluation of the spatial representativeness of land surface temperature validation sites

Jin Ma et al.

Summary: Spatial representativeness of ground sites is essential for the validation of satellite retrieved land surface temperature (LST) products. A temporal variation method (TVM) is proposed to evaluate the spatial representativeness of sites, using a spatial representativeness indicator (SRI) based on LST differences. Results show high correlation between temporally continuous SRI and original SRI, with variations mainly influenced by surface coverage changes and weather conditions. The method can be applied to other LST products and surface parameters to address spatial scale mismatch in validation.

A practical reanalysis data and thermal infrared remote sensing data merging (RTM) method for reconstruction of a 1-km all-weather land surface temperature

Xiaodong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel method for merging reanalyzed and thermal infrared remote sensing data to reconstruct all-weather land surface temperature (LST). Results show that this method outperforms current merging methods in terms of accuracy and image quality, with higher spatial completeness, indicating its potential for generating long-term all-weather LST records at moderate to high spatiotemporal resolutions.

Shortened duration and reduced area of frozen soil in the Northern Hemisphere

Ting Li et al.

Summary: The study found significant changes in soil freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) across the Northern Hemisphere over the past 40 years, primarily due to delays in frozen soil onset and advancements in thawing. Furthermore, it highlighted that near-surface air temperature and snowpack are the main driving factors of spatiotemporal variations in soil FTCs, with more drastic changes observed in Eurasia compared to North America.
