Removal and recovery of heavy metals from sewage sludge via three-stage integrated process

Hatice Yesil et al.

Summary: This study found that a combination of ultrasonication pretreatment and alkaline fermentation can achieve high hydrolysis rate, metal leaching rate, and reduced bioavailability of potentially toxic heavy metals in sewage sludge. The supported liquid membrane recovery method can effectively recover metals from bioleaching effluent.

Land Application of Biosolids in Europe: Possibilities, Con-Straints and Future Perspectives

Andrea Gianico et al.

Summary: The agricultural use of good quality sludge in Europe represents a value-added route to ensure growth sustainability, but specific regulations are required to minimize health issues and environmental risks. The legislative framework on sludge agricultural use lacks harmonization among EU Member States, and challenges such as the fate of emerging micropollutants and microplastics in sludge-amended soils, as well as public health concerns during the COVID-19 epidemic, need to be considered.

Influence of volatile fatty acids in anaerobic bioleaching of potentially toxic metals

Rahim Molaey et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) on the solubilization of potentially toxic metals during anaerobic digestion (AD) process, and found that VFAs enhanced the solubility of Ni while Cr exhibited higher solubility at neutral pH values. The addition of readily biodegradable carbon source resulted in accumulation of VFAs, altering the speciation of Cu and Zn between organically-bound and residual fractions, leading to consistently low solubility of Zn and Cu throughout the AD process.

Reconsidering hydrolysis kinetics for anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge applying cascade reactors with ultra-short residence times

Hongxiao Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, an innovative 4-stage cascade anaerobic digestion system was researched to enhance the hydrolysis of waste activated sludge. The cascade system showed higher tCOD reduction efficiency and specific hydrolysis rates compared to the reference conventional CSTR, indicating that operating multiple CSTRs in a cascading mode significantly improved enzymatic hydrolysis rate and extend in anaerobic WAS digestion. Additionally, the governing hydrolysis kinetics in the cascading reactors were found to be far more complex than the generally assumed simplified first-order kinetics.
