Precious-Group-Metal-Free Energy-Efficient Urea Electrolysis: Membrane Electrode Assembly Cell Using Ni3N Nanoparticles as Catalyst

Vineesh Thazhe Veettil et al.

Summary: The sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) limit the overall efficiency of green hydrogen production. A proposed strategy to overcome this is to replace OER with other kinetically favorable anodic reactions like urea oxidation reaction (UOR). Here, we develop an organometallic synthesis of nickel nitride nanoparticles supported on carbon (Ni3N-C) as the catalyst for both UOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). For the first time, a precious group metal-free electrolyzer based on Ni3N-C catalyst (as both anode and cathode) is implemented, and the urea electrolyzer cell has a 200 mV lower overpotential compared to that of the water electrolyzer.

Femtosecond laser micro-nano processing for boosting bubble releasing of gas evolution reactions

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: The coupling effect of chemical composition and physical structure is crucial for constructing superaerophobic electrodes. By using high precision femtosecond laser technology, hierarchical micro-nano structures with superaerophobic properties were successfully constructed on the surface of silicon substrate, inheriting such special super-wettability to subsequent self-supporting electrodes through chemical synthesis. The introduction of femtosecond laser has opened up new possibilities for synthesizing self-supporting electrodes for gas-involving reactions.

Fully exposed edge/corner active sites in Fe substituted-Ni(OH)2 tube-in-tube arrays for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Zi-Xiao Shi et al.

Summary: This study transformed amorphous Ni(OH)2 into short-range ordered Fe-substituted Ni(OH)2 with abundant electroactive edge/corner sites, and fabricated tube-in-tube arrays (TTAs) to enhance OER performance. The low-coordinated defect sites with Fe-Ni-Fe units in the short-range ordered structure of Fe-substituted Ni(OH)2 TTAs facilitate the formation of adsorbed oxygen, leading to efficient OER.
