Assessing the Potential of Deep Learning for Emulating Cloud Superparameterization in Climate Models With Real-Geography Boundary Conditions

Griffin Mooers et al.

Summary: The study explores the potential of using DNNs to emulate cloud superparameterization, achieving over 70% temporal variance explanation in the mid-to-upper troposphere. While the model showed good performance on diurnal to synoptic scales, there were challenges in accurately simulating fast, stochastic signals in the tropical, marine boundary layer. Sensitivity tests revealed complementary effects of adding positive constraints versus hyperparameter tuning on precipitation skill.
