Sarcopenia and risk of osteoporosis, falls and bone fractures in patients with chronic kidney disease: A systematic review

Anahita Rashid et al.

Summary: This systematic review explored the occurrence of osteoporosis, falls, and fractures in patients with sarcopenia and CKD, and found a significant association between sarcopenia and decreased bone mineral density/osteoporosis in patients with CKD. Osteosarcopenia: where osteoporosis and sarcopenia collide

Michael A. Clynes et al.

Summary: The coexistence of osteoporosis and sarcopenia, termed 'osteosarcopenia', is expected to increase significantly with an aging population, leading to increased personal and societal burden. Individuals with both conditions may face a greater risk of falls, fractures, institutionalization and mortality, with multifactorial etiology involving genetics, age, inflammation and obesity. Potential therapeutic agents targeting both muscle and bone are being developed, outlined in this review.

Genetic profiles of 103,106 individuals in the Taiwan Biobank provide insights into the health and history of Han Chinese

Chun-Yu Wei et al.

Summary: The Taiwan Biobank has collected genetic information from both high-coverage whole-genome sequencing and genome-wide SNP data of individuals with Han Chinese ancestry, revealing the full range of genetic variation in this population. The study found that some individuals carry mutations related to autosomal recessive diseases, cancer-predisposing genes, and variants affecting drug response, highlighting the potential for genetic testing to improve clinical care.
