A simple method of mechanical power calculation: using mean airway pressure to replace plateau pressure

Yi Chi et al.

Summary: The study introduced and validated a simple surrogate for mechanical power calculation in ventilated patients with or without ARDS, without any intervention. Results showed that the new method correlated well with the reference method in patients with or without ARDS, providing rapid and dynamic estimation of mechanical power at the bedside.

Summary: The study compared ventilation intensity in COVID-19 ARDS patients using INTELLiVENT-ASV versus conventional ventilation, with INTELLiVENT-ASV delivering ventilation with lower driving pressure and mechanical power.

Summary: The study found that intraoperative driving pressure is significantly associated with postoperative pulmonary complications and intraoperative adverse events in abdominal surgery, with higher risk in closed abdominal surgery patients.

Association of intensity of ventilation with 28-day mortality in COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory failure: insights from the PRoVENT-COVID study

Michiel T. U. Schuijt et al.

Summary: This study on invasively ventilated COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory failure found that mechanical power (MP) was independently associated with 28-day mortality, while driving pressure (ΔP) was not. Increasing quartiles of MP, stratified on comparable levels of ΔP, were associated with higher risks of 28-day mortality. These findings suggest that efforts to limit both ΔP and MP could lead to better outcomes for these patients.
