Programmable interactions and emergent geometry in an array of atom clouds

Avikar Periwal et al.

Summary: Interactions play a crucial role in controlling the flow of information and creating correlations in many-body quantum systems. By programming non-local interactions in an array of atomic ensembles within an optical cavity, researchers have been able to access effective geometries with different dimensions and topologies than the physical geometry of the array. This work has implications for simulating frustrated magnets, investigating quantum optimization paradigms, and engineering entangled resource states for sensing and computation.

Multiple Self-Organized Phases and Spatial Solitons in Cold Atoms Mediated by Optical Feedback

Giuseppe Baio et al.

Summary: The study shows that the transverse self-structuring of cold atomic clouds can be achieved using effective atomic interactions mediated by a coherent driving beam reflected by a single mirror, resulting in a richer self-structuring behavior than that of an effective-Kerr medium. Different interaction strengths lead to hexagonal, stripe, and honeycomb phases, with the system recovering inversion symmetry in the stripe phase. Additionally, the subcritical character of the honeycomb phase allows for light-density feedback solitons to function as self-sustained dark atomic traps with motion controlled by phase gradients in the driving beam.

Mott transition in a cavity-boson system: A quantitative comparison between theory and experiment

Rui Lin et al.

Summary: The competition between short-range and cavity-mediated infinite-range interactions in a cavity-boson system results in the presence of a superfluid phase and a Mott-insulator phase. By comparing experimental measurements and simulations, it is shown that representing the system using a two-dimensional four-well potential wave function yields reasonably accurate results. This approach provides a new quantitative numerical modeling method for studying the physics of the superfluid-Mott-insulator phase boundary.

Pattern formation in quantum ferrofluids: From supersolids to superglasses

J. Hertkorn et al.

Summary: The study investigates the phase diagram of two-dimensional quantum ferrofluids formed from ultracold atoms in different trap geometries, revealing the dominance of two-dimensional supersolid crystals at low densities and the presence of honeycomb, labyrinthine states, and a pumpkin phase at higher densities. The research sheds light on the various patterns of quantum ferrofluids and demonstrates that their occurrence is common in strongly dipolar interacting systems stabilized by effects beyond mean-field.
