Nano-pesticides: the lunch-box principle-deadly goodies (semio-chemical functionalised nanoparticles that deliver pesticide only to target species) COMMENT

J. J. Scott-Fordsmand et al.

Summary: The researchers propose a nano-pesticide application approach called the lunch-box or deadly-goodies approach, which aims to attract and kill the target without harming other organisms/species. This method requires a combination of chemical ecological knowledge, nanomaterial techniques, and novel pesticides.

Con fi rmatory assays for transient changes of omics in soil invertebrates - Copper materials in a multigenerational exposure

Rita C. Bicho et al.

Summary: The environmental risk assessment based on chronic and longer term exposure effects is highly relevant. This study aimed to investigate the long term effects of Cu materials on biological organisms through histology and immunohistochemistry, integrating all levels of biological organization onto an adverse outcome pathway framework. The study revealed both similar and different stress responses caused by CuO NMs and CuCl2 at various levels of biological organization.

Multiomics assessment in Enchytraeus crypticus exposed to Ag nanomaterials (Ag NM300K) and ions (AgNO3) - Metabolomics, proteomics (& transcriptomics)

Vera L. Maria et al.

Summary: Silver nanomaterials are widely used and studied, and in this study, the differential impact of AgNM300K and AgNO3 on protein and metabolite expression in Enchytraeus crypticus was assessed using high-throughput techniques. Results showed that the two materials elicited different responses in biological pathways, with AgNO3 causing a dose response increase of proteins/metabolites and NM300K causing more upregulation at lower concentrations. This study contributes to understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of silver nanomaterials on organisms.

Ecotoxicological and regulatory aspects of environmental sustainability of nanopesticides

Renato Grillo et al.

Summary: The development of nanopesticides for sustainable agriculture faces challenges regarding unintended toxic effects on the environment and non-target species. There is currently limited understanding of the ecotoxicological effects of nanopesticides, and more research and regulatory measures are needed to ensure their safe use in the future.

Annelid genomes: Enchytraeus crypticus, a soil model for the innate (and primed) immune system

Monica J. B. Amorim et al.

Summary: The Enchytraeus crypticus, a soil-dwelling annelid worm, has been used as an ecotoxicology model for over 20 years. Its first high-quality reference genome reveals significant expansions of gene families related to regeneration, innate immune system, and stress response. The presence of ACE homolog in E. crypticus suggests its potential as a model for studying interactions between regeneration, innate immune system, and aging-dependent decline.
