LAMMPS-a flexible simulation tool for particle-based materials modeling at the atomic, meso, and continuum scales

Aidan P. Thompson et al.

Summary: LAMMPS, a classical molecular dynamics simulator released as an open source code in 2004, has gained popularity for its wide variety of particle interaction models, platform compatibility, and user control over simulation details. With contributions from numerous developers, it has grown from 50,000 lines of code to a million today, showcasing new capabilities like dynamic load balancing and quantum-accuracy machine learning interatomic potentials.

Effect of external electric field on diffusivity and flash sintering of 8YSZ: A molecular dynamics study

Wenwu Xu et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations show that the presence of an external electric field promotes the formation of Frenkel pair defects in 8YSZ, leading to enhanced diffusivities of cations and anions in the system. This understanding provides insights into the flash sintering mechanisms of ionic ceramics, particularly the coupled thermal-field effect during the process.

Investigation of the effect of local atomic polarization on field-enhanced ion transport in insulating binary oxides: The case of CeO2

Mohamed S. Abdallah et al.

Summary: In this study, the validity of five theoretical models for field-enhanced ion diffusion in crystalline insulators was assessed. It was found that considering local polarization effects induced in the diffusing ion itself and its vicinity leads to the most successful theoretical models. However, all models did not account for the effect of electric field and finite temperature on local polarization, resulting in discrepancies between predicted and reference values, particularly at high fields. Further accurate treatments should consider field- and temperature-dependent local polarization effects.

Nonlinear ion mobility at high electric field strengths in the perovskites SrTiO3 and CH3NH3PbI3

Dennis Kemp et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the electrochemical mobility of anions in perovskite structures through molecular dynamics simulations, revealing that mobility is independent of field at low values but becomes field-dependent at higher values. While the behavior of oxide-ion mobility in inorganic perovskites can be quantitatively predicted, the mobility of iodide ions in hybrid perovskites requires more complex models.

Strain-modified ionic conductivity in rare-earth substituted ceria: effects of migration direction, barriers, and defect-interactions

George F. Harrington et al.

Summary: This study investigates how ionic transport in functional oxides is influenced by strain, particularly focusing on rare-earth substituted ceria epitaxial films under biaxial strain. The research shows that the out-of-plane transport is more sensitive to strain than in-plane transport, and the size of rare-earth substitutionals significantly impacts the strain effect on ionic conductivity. By simulating conductivity using the kinetic Monte Carlo method based on density functional theory, the study reveals that both migration barriers and defect interactions contribute to the strain-modified transport.
