Postdeposition Sulfurization of CuInSe2 Solar Absorbers by Employing Sacrificial CuInS2 Precursor Layers

Faraz Khavari et al.

Summary: A new method of sulfur grading in CuInSe2 thin-film solar absorbers is proposed by introducing an ultrathin sacrificial CuInS2 layer. The sulfur grading phenomenon is observed in the Se- and SeS-treated samples, and the formation of mixed CuIn(S,Se)2 phase is confirmed. The treated bilayer samples show higher optical bandgap and V-OC, but exhibit lower efficiency due to the blocking effect of internal electron barrier.

Formation of Cu(In,Ga)S2 chalcopyrite thin films following a 3-stage co-evaporation process

A. Thomere et al.

Summary: This study investigates the origin of the bi-layered structure of CuIn1-xGaxS2 (CIGS) films deposited following a 3-stage process. Interrupting the growth at key steps and characterizing the differences using various techniques, a model attributing composition plateaus to the formation of Cu-poor crystalline phases is proposed.

Experimental and Theoretical Study of Stable and Metastable Phases in Sputtered CuInS2

Jes K. Larsen et al.

Summary: This contribution investigates the stable and metastable phases forming in CuInS2 (CIS) thin films, which has gained renewed interest due to its potential application in tandem solar cells. The study utilizes a combined theoretical and experimental approach, including ab initio calculations, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, and Raman spectra analysis. Multiple CIS structures with different lattices are identified, and their XRD/Raman patterns are shown to have overlapping features. Thin films with different compositions are synthesized, and it is found that several CIS polymorphs are formed. Additionally, CuIn5S8 and NaInS2 compounds accommodating In-excess are found alongside the CIS polymorphs. The study emphasizes the importance of tight composition control for stabilizing the metastable polymorphs.

Investigation of AgGaSe2 as a Wide Gap Solar Cell Absorber

Jes K. Larsen et al.

Summary: The compound AgGaSe2 is a potential wide gap solar cell material, but its tolerance to off-stoichiometry and formation of secondary phases during deposition can significantly affect device performance. X-ray diffraction is effective in distinguishing different phases in the material system, while Raman spectroscopy is less successful in identifying secondary phases. Devices with optimized processing conditions achieved the highest reported efficiency of up to 5.8% for AgGaSe2 solar cells.

Nicolas Gaillard

Summary: This perspective reviews the key barriers that must be addressed by the community to enable economical chalcopyrite-based PEC water splitting; it highlights how theoretical modeling can be used to identify promising ordered vacancy compound absorbers with improved energetics; and describes the discovery of a new passivation layer candidate for prolonged durability through advanced spectroscopic analysis performed on chalcopyrite photocathodes after PEC testing.

Over 15% efficient wide-band-gap Cu(ln,Ga)S2 solar cell: Suppressing bulk and interface recombination through composition engineering

Sudhanshu Shukla et al.

Summary: The progress of Cu(In,Ga)S-2 has been limited by photovoltage losses, but improvements have been made by reducing the [Cu]/[Ga+In] ratio and identifying major performance-limiting defects. Additionally, interface recombination has been suppressed using a Zn(O,S) buffer layer, leading to increased efficiency and Voc in solar cells.

Performance Limitations of Wide-Gap (Ag,Cu)(In,Ga)Se2 Thin-Film Solar Cells

Jan Keller et al.

Summary: The study focused on the impact of absorber stoichiometry in ACIGS solar cells with bandgaps greater than 1.40 eV, showing that moving away from AgGaSe2 composition can reduce ordered vacancy compounds, leading to improved device performance. An inverse correlation between V-OC and J(SC) was observed, with capacitance profiling revealing enhanced carrier collection in fully depleted samples. Additionally, the measurement of a solar cell with V-OC = 0.916 V at E-g = 1.46 eV represents the highest reported value for this bandgap to date.
