Revision of Triplicatella (Orthothecida, Hyolitha) with preserved digestive tracts from the early Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstatte, South China

Fan Liu et al.

Summary: The cap-shaped shells of Triplicatella are found in small shelly fossil assemblages, with articulated specimens suggesting they represent the operculum of a hyolith. Fossils of Triplicatella opimus from the Chengjiang Lagerstätte of South China show well-preserved soft tissues, indicating it was a deposit feeder. The new anatomical information from T. opimus suggests an intermediate stage in the development of the characteristic folded gut of orthothecid hyoliths.

Soft part preservation in hyolithids from the lower Cambrian (Stage 4) Guanshan Biota of South China and its implications

Fan Liu et al.

Summary: This study presents remarkably preserved hyolithids from the Guanshan Biota in Yunnan Province, China, providing new evidence for the internal structure and soft tissue preservation of these animals and contributing to the reconstruction of hyolithid anatomy. The research reveals that the gut anatomy of hyolithids was evolutionarily conservative from the early Cambrian through to at least the Ordovician period.

The oldest Cambrian trilobite - brachiopod association in South China

Zhiliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study in South China reveals the oldest Cambrian brachiopod-trilobite association, providing potential for stratigraphic correlation. The new species Eoobolus incipiens represents one of the earliest linguliform brachiopods.

Advances in the soft anatomy and skeletal microstructures of Cambrian hyoliths in China and their implications for lophotrochozoan evolution

Fan Liu et al.

Summary: Hyolitha is an extinct marine invertebrate group that roamed throughout the Paleozoic era. Recent discoveries of Cambrian fossil hyoliths from North America, Greenland, Australia, and China have shed light on their biology and life mode. New evidence from China presents significant insights into the morphology of hyoliths and their biological affinity.
