From CO2 to Formic Acid Fuel Cells

Zhenni Ma et al.

Summary: Formic acid is a liquid, safe, and energy-dense carrier that can be sustainably produced from CO2 electroreduction. While the formic acid market is currently saturated, there is potential for expansion through fuel cell technologies. Formic acid-based fuel cells offer high theoretical open-circuit voltage, lower storage costs, and increased safety compared to traditional hydrogen-based fuel cells. Current designs are primarily at a laboratory scale, with the need for further efforts to scale up and improve performance.

Iridium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation of Quinolines in Biphasic Systems or Water

Lixian Wang et al.

Summary: An asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of quinolines has been developed in water or biphasic systems, utilizing a water-soluble iridium catalyst with an easily available aminobenzimidazole ligand. The reaction proceeds smoothly with a catalyst loading as low as 0.001 mol%, achieving high turnover numbers and turnover frequencies. Various quinoline and N-heteroaryl compounds can be transformed into the desired products with high yield and enantiomeric excess.

Utilization of renewable formic acid from lignocellulosic biomass for the selective hydrogenation and/or N-methylation

Chao-Zheng Zhou et al.

Summary: Utilizing renewable formic acid from lignocellulosic biomass as a hydrogen and carbon source, selective hydrogenation and N-methylation of various quinolines, indoles, and anilines were achieved under mild conditions with high efficiencies. Mechanistic studies revealed that the hydrogenation proceeds through a transfer hydrogenation pathway.

BF3•Et2O as a metal-free catalyst for direct reductive amination of aldehydes with amines using formic acid as a reductant

Zhenli Luo et al.

Summary: This method enables the direct reductive amination of aldehydes with amines using formic acid as a reductant under the catalysis of inexpensive BF3 center dot Et2O, providing access to various secondary and tertiary amines in high yields with wide functional group tolerance. It is convenient for late-stage functionalization of bioactive compounds and preparation of commercialized drug molecules, with advantages of simple operation, workup, and easy scale-up. Mechanistic studies reveal the involvement of imine activation by BF3 and hydride transfer from formic acid.

Formic acid disproportionation into formaldehyde triggered by vanadium complexes with iridium catalysis under mild conditions in N-methylation

Chao-Zheng Zhou et al.

Summary: This study presents a sustainable method for the production of formaldehyde through the disproportionation of formic acid, catalyzed by iridium-triggered vanadium complexes under mild conditions. The successful demonstration of gram-scale application of in situ generated formaldehyde highlights the potential of this method in industrial production processes.
