Overview of the MOSAiC expedition: Snow and sea ice

Marcel Nicolaus et al.

Summary: This study conducted year-round observations of the physical properties and processes of snow and ice in the Arctic Ocean, aiming to understand the interaction between the ice pack, atmosphere, and ocean. The results showed that the spatial variability of snow is crucial for understanding snow-related feedback processes, and the ice pack undergoes rapid transformations and motions during drift. These findings are important for improving climate models and validating remote sensing methods.

Overview of the MOSAiC expedition-Atmosphere INTRODUCTION

Matthew D. Shupe et al.

Summary: With the Arctic rapidly changing, there is a crucial need to observe, understand, and model these changes. The MOSAiC expedition successfully documented and characterized various aspects of the Arctic atmospheric system through a comprehensive observational program. The observations revealed the significant influence of atmospheric variability and highlighted the higher temperatures and moisture near the sea ice edge during summer. The obtained data will support further research and modeling capabilities in the Arctic.

Observing Arctic Sea Ice

Melinda A. Webster et al.

Summary: Observation plays a crucial role in our understanding of Arctic sea ice, but the disparities between observations hinder a comprehensive understanding. This article reviews the history of Arctic sea ice observations and proposes a design for integrating and utilizing data from different sources, scales, and disciplines. The results demonstrate the limitations of interpreting a single data set and highlight the importance of combining observations across spatial and temporal scales to enhance our understanding of Arctic sea ice and its role in the climate system.

From Bright Windows to Dark Spots: Snow Cover Controls Melt Pond Optical Properties During Refreezing

P. Anhaus et al.

Summary: The study found that during the summer-autumn transition period in 2018, more snow accumulated on refrozen melt ponds compared to adjacent bare ice, leading to a reduction in light transmittance of the ponds even below that of bare ice. This situation, not described in the literature before, could have significant implications for autumn ecosystem activity, oceanic heat budget, and thermodynamic ice growth.

Ubiquity of human-induced changes in climate variability

Keith B. Rodgers et al.

Summary: Climate variability plays a crucial role in climate adaptation efforts, and greenhouse warming alters variance spectra of Earth system variables, leading to a wide range of changes. The modeling results have important implications for climate adaptation, resource management, seasonal predictions, and assessing stressors on terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

Meteorological conditions during the MOSAiC expedition: Normal or anomalous?

Annette Rinke et al.

Summary: Based on data from October 11 to November 20, most meteorological conditions were normal, but anomalies occurred during synoptic events. During winter and spring, warm, moist air transported from northern North Atlantic or northwestern Siberia into the Arctic caused record-breaking temperatures and water vapor.
