Mass spectrometric sampling of flames: how ionic equilibria in flames produce sampling falsifications and fake ions, but provide kinetic and thermodynamic data on the reaction occurring

A. N. Hayhurst

Summary: Continuous sampling of a flame at approximately 10(-8) atm. for mass spectrometry seriously disrupts the flame, resulting in fake ions due to unavoidable sample cooling. Different sizes of sampling orifices can lead to sample cooling during chemical reactions, affecting the composition.

Biao Fu et al.

Summary: This review critically summarizes recent progress in the study of REY in coal ash, evaluating the content, speciation, and extraction potentials of REY. It discusses the different forms, distribution behavior, and transformation mechanisms of REY in coal ash, and proposes possible retention mechanisms of REY by aluminosilicate glass at boiler temperature. The modification of REY speciation in fly ash by reactions with flue gas components and current extraction techniques for REY recovery from coal combustion ash are also highlighted.

Biochar triggers methanogenesis recovery of a severely acidified anaerobic digestion system via hydrogen-based syntrophic pathway inhibition

Gaojun Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the use of biochar as an additive was developed to improve the rapid methanogenesis recovery of a severely acidified AD system by enhancing VFA syntrophic oxidation and altering the microbial community structure. The addition of biochar significantly decreased hydrogen partial pressure, thermodynamically stimulating VFA oxidation and enriching electro-active Syntrophomonas and Methanosarcina. This research confirms that biochar is a promising additive for the rapid methanogenic recovery of acidified AD systems.
