Coordinated operation of electricity and natural gas systems from day-ahead to real-time markets

Omar J. Guerra et al.

Summary: Coordination between power and gas systems improves total gas delivery and reduces out-of-merit order dispatch in the electricity system, but can have mixed effects on carbon dioxide emissions depending on system load and renewable energy penetration levels.

The Value of Inter-Regional Coordination and Transmission in Decarbonizing the US Electricity System

Patrick R. Brown et al.

Summary: Preventing global warming in excess of 1.5 degrees C-2 degrees C requires a transition to zero-carbon electricity systems by midcentury along with the widespread electrification of other sectors. Inter-state coordination and transmission expansion can significantly reduce the system cost of a 100%-renewable US power system, while sensitivity analyses show different cost reductions for various technologies impacting electricity costs differently.

Extended convex hull-based distributed optimal energy flow of integrated electricity-gas systems

Rong-Peng Liu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an extended convex hull based method to address optimal energy flow problems for integrated electricity and gas systems in a distributed manner, aiming to minimize operation cost. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is tractable and effective in obtaining feasible optimal solutions for multi-block optimal energy flow problems.

Accounting for the Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity of Regional Electricity Transfers

Gregory Von Wald et al.

Summary: Accurately quantifying greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity transfers across regulatory jurisdictions is challenging, but essential for climate policy implementation. This study proposes a novel consumption-based accounting methodology and compares different approaches for estimating emission factors in the absence of fully specified nominal electricity flows. The application of this methodology to California regulators' quantification of specified and unspecified electricity imports and associated GHG emissions highlights the need for a comprehensive, empirical accounting framework to improve the accuracy and consistency of policies regulating regional electricity transfers.

Electrofuel Synthesis from Variable Renewable Electricity: An Optimization-Based Techno-Economic Analysis

Evan D. Sherwin

Summary: Electrofuels, low-carbon liquid fuels synthesized from CO2 and hydrogen, could potentially become economically viable but require substantial reductions in the capital cost of DAC, electrolyzers, and renewable electricity generation for cost competitiveness. Operational flexibility is also crucial for efficient power supply to capital-intensive equipment.

Quantifying the impact of residential space heating electrification on the Texas electric grid

Philip R. White et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of complete electrification of space heating in Texas residential sector on energy consumption, peak power demand, and grid capacity were investigated. Results showed that winter peak electricity demand in the residential sector could significantly increase with electrification, requiring grid capacity enhancement. However, higher efficiency heat pumps may lead to stable or decreased annual electricity consumption due to efficient cooling.
