Black hole spectroscopy horizons for current and future gravitational wave detectors

Iara Ota et al.

Summary: Black hole spectroscopy involves observing multiple quasinormal modes in the ringdown of a binary black hole merger to test the no-hair theorem. A conservative high Bayes factor threshold is suggested to determine the black hole spectroscopy horizons. A multimode analysis based on simulated signals can help rank subdominant modes, with different results for nearly equal mass binaries and very asymmetric binaries.

Astrophysical and Theoretical Physics Implications from Multimessenger Neutron Star Observations

Hector O. Silva et al.

Summary: NICER recently measured the mass and equatorial radius of an isolated neutron star, inferring information about its moment of inertia, quadrupole moment, and surface eccentricity. By combining various observations, including radio observations, the first theory-agnostic and equation-of-state-insensitive test of general relativity was implemented, setting a new stringent constraint on gravitational parity violation. This paves the way for future tests of general relativity using multimessenger neutron star observations.

GWTC-2: Compact Binary Coalescences Observed by LIGO and Virgo during the First Half of the Third Observing Run

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: This report presents 39 candidate gravitational-wave events detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo during the first half of the third observing run (O3a) between April 1, 2019 and October 1, 2019. The events include black hole binary mergers up to a redshift of approximately 0.8 and events where the components cannot be unambiguously identified. The range of candidate event masses has expanded compared to previous catalogs, with the inclusion of binary systems with asymmetric mass ratios.

Chern-Simons caps for rotating black holes

Stephon Alexander et al.

Summary: We studied the dynamical Chern-Simons gravity as an effective quantum field theory, and found that slowly rotating black holes acquire novel geometric structures due to the gravitational dynamical Chern-Simons term. The rotating black-hole solutions exhibit caplike domains with nonstandard dynamics within them, violating the focusing condition for geodesics. This implies that the Hawking-Penrose singularity theorem cannot be straightforwardly applied to probe matter within the Chern-Simons caps.

Petrov type, principal null directions, and Killing tensors of slowly rotating black holes in quadratic gravity

Caroline B. Owen et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the symmetries of black holes in modified theories of gravity, specifically in two quadratic gravity theories. By computing various properties of spinning black hole solutions in these theories, the researchers suggest that the exact, quadratic-gravity, black-hole solutions may not possess a fourth constant of motion.

Enhancing modified gravity detection from gravitational-wave observations using the parametrized ringdown spin expansion coeffcients formalism

Gregorio Carullo

Summary: Realizing the full potential of black hole spectroscopy requires constraints on modified theories of gravity in a general and robust framework. By applying more stringent parametrizations, improvements in inference can be made from gravitational wave data, leading to reduced errors on deviation parameters. The use of a high-spin version of parametrized ringdown coefficients shows promise in enhancing constraints in LIGO-Virgo observations.

Probing fundamental physics with gravitational waves: The next generation

Scott E. Perkins et al.

Summary: Gravitational wave observations of compact binary mergers are already providing tests of general relativity and constraints on modified gravity. The sensitivity upgrades of the instruments and uncertainties in astrophysical compact binary populations are crucial in determining the impact on investigating fundamental physics with gravitational waves. Using a stacked Fisher matrix analysis, future theory-agnostic bounds on modifications of general relativity and specific theories can be thoroughly investigated.

Tests of general relativity using multiband observations of intermediate mass binary black hole mergers

Sayantani Datta et al.

Summary: Multiband gravitational wave astronomy involves observing gravitational waves in different frequency bands to test general relativity. By conducting multiband observations of intermediate-mass binary black holes, multiple post-Newtonian coefficients can be measured simultaneously, leading to stricter constraints on modifications to GR. The improvement from multibanding often exceeds the best bounds from individual observatories due to the lifting of degeneracies among parameters when combining information from different detectors.
