A jamming plane of sphere packings

Yuliang Jin et al.

Summary: The concept of jamming has attracted great research interest due to its broad relevance in soft-matter and its connection to sphere packing and optimization problems. The study shows that amorphous jammed states of frictionless spheres can be extended from a fixed density jamming-point to a jamming-plane that spans density and shear strain axes. The jamming-plane can be divided into reversible-jamming and irreversible-jamming regimes, reflecting the escape from metastable glass basins.

Summary: The study reveals that gaps in jamming systems are more correlated than forces across various models, with similar results obtained. In models close to crystalline packings, there is less consistency with theoretical predictions for the distribution of forces and gaps.

Dilatancy, shear jamming, and a generalized jamming phase diagram of frictionless sphere packings

Varghese Babu et al.

Summary: In frictionless packings, isotropic jamming densities above the minimal density lead to the emergence of shear-induced jamming and dilatancy. The system evolves into a steady-state under constant pressure shear, with density only depending on pressure and showing critical behavior at the J-point density. Packings with different jamming densities display equivalent scaling properties under compression but exhibit distinct rheological behavior under shear, resulting in discontinuous increases in yield stress with density.

Critical scaling of compression-driven jamming of athermal frictionless spheres in suspension

Anton Peshkov et al.

Summary: Numerical study of compressing athermal, overdamped, frictionless spheres reveals critical behavior at the jamming transition, showing a critical scaling relation for pressure as a function of packing fraction phi and compression rate. Bulk viscosity diverges upon jamming, and analysis determines critical exponents associated with the compression-driven jamming transition. Results suggest stress-isotropic, compression-driven jamming may share universality class with stress-anisotropic, shear-driven jamming.
