On computing the similarity of trapezoidal fuzzy sets using an Automated Area Method

Jerry M. Mendel

Summary: This paper presents a new Automated Area Method (AAM) for calculating the Jaccard similarity of non-normal trapezoidal fuzzy sets. The AAM efficiently computes the area under the minimum of two fuzzy sets by using figures for 40 possible cases and providing area formulas based on simple geometry. Flowcharted algorithms are then used to automatically determine the case without the need for figures, only requiring the coordinates of the vertices of the fuzzy sets. The AAM can also be applied to compute other similarity measures and subsethood between fuzzy sets.
