Enhanced proliferation and angiogenic phenotype of endothelial cells via negatively-charged alginate and chondroitin sulfate microsphere hydrogels

Xiong Xiong et al.

Summary: The novel negatively-charged alginate and chondroitin sulfate microsphere hydrogel (nCACSMH) with enhanced permeability and biocompatibility was developed for efficient cell delivery. The increasing content of chondroitin sulfate led to the uneven, plicate and expanded surface of nCACSMH, favorable for cell proliferation and maintaining normal physiological functions. Chondroitin sulfate released from nCACSMH accelerated proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and up-regulated angiogenesis related genes expression.

Investigation on the tunable effect of oxidized konjac glucomannan with different molecular weight on gelatin-based composite hydrogels

Gaiying Li et al.

Summary: In this study, oxidized konjac glucomannan (OKG) with different molecular weights were used as polysaccharide crosslinker to reinforce gelatin-based hydrogels. The results indicated that higher molecular weight OKG increased the mechanical strength and self-healing ability of the composite hydrogels, as well as promoted cell proliferation.

Sulfated polysaccharide directs therapeutic angiogenesis via endogenous VEGF secretion of macrophages

Yuanman Yu et al.

Summary: A study found that semisynthetic sulfated chitosan (SCS) can induce angiogenesis by increasing the secretion of VEGF by macrophages, aiding in the treatment of ischemic diseases. SCS works through the VEGF-VEGFR2 signaling pathway, and inhibiting VEGF or VEGFR2 signals can affect the role of macrophages in angiogenesis.

Gelatin/Oxidized Konjac Glucomannan Composite Hydrogels with High Resistance to Large Deformation for Tissue Engineering Applications

Yongchao Jiang et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared gelatin hydrogels with remarkable mechanical properties and recoverability via Shill's base chemical cross-linking. The optimized process of OKG and the introduction of various percentages to create G-OKGs resulted in significantly increased stress and modulus compared to pure gelatin hydrogels. The G-OKGs also exhibited biocompatibility and supported the proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells.
