Immobilization of Lewis Basic Sites into a Stable Ethane-Selective MOF Enabling One-Step Separation of Ethylene from a Ternary Mixture

Xiao-Wen Gu et al.

Summary: This study introduces Lewis basic sites into a C2H6-selective MOF for efficient purification of C2H4 from ternary mixtures, demonstrating high C2H2 and C2H6 uptakes and selectivities. The amino-functionalized UiO-67-(NH2)(2) shows exceptional performance by providing suitable pore confinement and functional surfaces decorated with amino groups for stronger interactions with C2H2 and C2H6. Breakthrough experiments with C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 mixtures under dry and wet conditions confirm the remarkable C2H4 productivity of UiO-67-(NH2)(2).

Understanding how pore surface fluorination influences light hydrocarbon separation in metal-organic frameworks

Xue-Qian Wu et al.

Summary: This study established a contrastive model by structurally modifying Cu(II)-MOFs constructed from isonicotinic acid and its fluorinated analogue, aiming to control pore surface fluorination for light hydrocarbon separation. The fluorinated MOFs showed enhanced selectivity without increasing regeneration energy consumption, highlighting the influence of pore surface fluorination on light hydrocarbon adsorption/separation properties and promoting the rational design of new adsorbents at the atom level.

Efficient Purification of Ethylene from C2 Hydrocarbons with an C2H6/C2H2-Selective Metal-Organic Framework

Shan-Qing Yang et al.

Summary: The separation of ethylene (C2H4) from C-2 hydrocarbons is challenging, but the newly synthesized microporous Mg-based MOF NUM-9 shows promise with high stability and selectivity for C2H6/C2H2. NUM-9a, when activated, demonstrates good performance in separating C2H6/C2H2 from raw ethylene gases, and its unique structure allows for the selective adsorption of C2H6 and C2H2 simultaneously, leading to a greener and more energy-efficient separation strategy for separating C2H4 from C-2 hydrocarbon mixtures.

A MOF-based Ultra-Strong Acetylene Nano-trap for Highly Efficient C2H2/CO2 Separation

Zheng Niu et al.

Summary: A new type of ultra-strong C2H2 nano-trap has been proposed, which efficiently captures C2H2 molecules and separates C2H2/CO2 mixture based on multiple binding interactions. The nano-trap exhibits high C2H2 uptake, selectivity, and the locations of C2H2 molecules within it have been visualized by in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, identifying multiple binding sites responsible for the strong interactions with C2H2.

Pore Engineering for One-Step Ethylene Purification from a Three-Component Hydrocarbon Mixture

Baoyong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study presents three new isostructural porous coordination networks that can produce high-purity ethylene through one separation step, by selectively adsorbing acetylene and ethane while having low affinity for ethylene. Hindered by the similar properties of C2 hydrocarbons, the networks achieved this through fine-tuned dual cage structures and specific interactions within the cages.

One-step ethylene production from a four-component gas mixture by a single physisorbent

Jian-Wei Cao et al.

Summary: The authors developed a metal-organic framework-based physisorbent for the one-step separation of high-purity ethylene from quaternary gas mixtures, achieving polymer-grade purity in a single step. Molecular simulations provided insight into the selective adsorption mechanism of the physisorbent, Zn-atz-oba, enabling the coadsorption of acetylene, ethane, and CO2 over ethylene. Dynamic breakthrough experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of the physisorbent in producing high-purity ethylene from complex gas mixtures.

A reticular chemistry guide for the design of periodic solids

Hao Jiang et al.

Summary: Reticular chemistry has enabled the synthesis of diverse metalorganic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks through the linking of well-defined molecular building blocks into crystalline extended frameworks. The methodologies in this field are based on building blocks, targeted nets, and isoreticular chemistry, with emphasis on edge-transitive nets for the design of MOFs. Emerging concepts such as merged-net approach and net-coded building units show potential in synthesizing intricate or multi-component MOFs. Challenges and opportunities exist in the modification, expansion, and contraction of building blocks for the assembly of increasingly intricate frameworks.
