When push comes to shove

Liang Zhang

Summary: Molecules are usually adsorbed onto a surface from a solution through a spontaneous equilibrium process. However, it has been discovered that macrocycles can be mechanically pumped onto a MOF substrate, leading to an out-of-equilibrium state.

A chiral interlocking auxiliary strategy for the synthesis of mechanically planar chiral rotaxanes

Alberto de Juan et al.

Summary: Rotaxanes can exhibit molecular chirality solely due to the mechanical bond between the axle and encircling macrocycle, without the presence of covalent stereogenic units. The synthesis of such molecules remains challenging, but a chiral interlocking auxiliary strategy has been discovered to effectively load macrocycles onto new axles. This strategy has shown potential for producing mechanically planar chiral rotaxanes with high enantiopurity, including 'impossible' rotaxanes lacking functional groups for direct synthesis by other means.

Maximizing the [c2]daisy chain to lasso ratio through competitive self-templating clipping reactions

Adrian Saura-Sanmartin et al.

Summary: Self-templating two-component coupling reactions resulted in the isolation of two threaded products with different molecular sizes: a lasso-type rotaxane and a daisy chain rotaxane. Their distribution in the final reaction mixture varies depending on the concentration of the reactants. This methodology also allowed the synthesis of a large 84-membered cyclic multistation rotaxane.

Precise Spatial Arrangement and Interaction between Two Different Mobile Components in a Metal-Organic Framework

Benjamin H. Wilson et al.

Summary: A study demonstrated that by inserting an H-shaped rotaxane with specific structure into different MOFs, rotaxane-containing MOFs with precise spatial arrangements of components can be formed. Through the use of VT solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR), it was found that the dynamics of the rotor are influenced by the presence of the macrocycle, while the translational position of the macrocyclic wheel along the rotaxane axle is dictated by the bulk and rotational orientation of the central rotor.

Effective Encapsulation of C60 by Metal-Organic Frameworks with Polyamide Macrocyclic Linkers

Adrian Saura-Sanmartin et al.

Summary: A flexible benzylic amide macrocycle with two carboxylic acid groups was used as the organic ligand to prepare robust copper(II)- and zinc(II)-based metal-organic frameworks in this study. These frameworks crystallized in the C2/m space group, forming non-interpenetrated channels with a large solvent-accessible volume. The absence of threads in these novel materials led to improvements in dimensionality, pore size, and dynamic guest adaptability. The materials showed high efficiency in encapsulating fullerene C60 and selective recognition of different fullerenes, particularly in mixtures of C60 and C70.

25 Years of Reticular Chemistry

Ralph Freund et al.

Summary: The core of reticular chemistry has brought precision and expertise of organic and inorganic synthesis to the solid state. The most profound scientific innovation of this field has been the design strategies for the synthesis of extended crystalline solids through strong directional bonds, highlighting the different classes of reticular materials developed and how complexity can be introduced into their backbones. Structural control over these materials is being extended from the molecular scale to their crystal morphology and shape on the nanoscale, all the way to their shaping on the bulk scale.

Mechanical bonding activation in rotaxane-based organocatalysts

Jesus de Maria Perez et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of succinamide-based hydrogen-bonded [2]rotaxanes with acyclic secondary amine as the catalytically active sites were synthesized and evaluated for their catalytic activity in an iminium-type process. The presence of an interlocked polyamide macrocycle notably increased the catalytic efficiency of the entwined organocatalysts by rapidly forming a reactive iminium intermediate with the aldehyde. The hydrogen-bonding interaction between the macrocycle and the electrophile plays a crucial role in the rapid formation and stabilization of the key intermediate.
