Macrocyclic Donor-Acceptor Dyads Composed of a Perylene Bisimide Dye Surrounded by Oligothiophene Bridges

Kevin Bold et al.

Summary: Two macrocyclic architectures comprising oligothiophene strands that connect the imide positions of a perylene biscimide (PBI) dye have been synthesized via a platinum-mediated cross-coupling strategy. The crystal structure of the double bridged PBI reveals all syn-arranged thiophene units enclosed a planar PBI chromophore via a 12-membered macrocycle. The target structures exhibit ultrafast Forster Resonance Energy Transfer and photoinduced electron transfer, resulting in extremely low fluorescence quantum yields even in the lowest polarity cyclohexane solvent.

Summary: Polymerization of ROMP-derived polyM1 and polyM2 shows differences in the content of trans olefins and the optical properties in solution and film state. Both polymers exhibit excellent characteristics as electron-accepting materials with good film-forming ability and thermal stability, despite some differences in film morphology observed by AFM analysis.

Silylethynyl Substitution for Preventing Aggregate Formation in Perylene Diimides

Erkan Aksoy et al.

Summary: Ethynylene-bridged perylene diimides with different sized silane groups were synthesized to prevent the formation of non-radiative trap sites. The shielded PDIs showed resistance to aggregation and higher photoluminescence quantum yield at high concentrations. This prevention of dimer/aggregate formation extends the potential uses of PDIs in various high concentration photonics and optoelectronic applications.

Charge-Delocalized State and Coherent Vibrational Dynamics in Rigid PBI H-Aggregates

Seongsoo Kang et al.

Summary: This study explores the ultrafast photoinduced dynamics and vibrational coherences of two perylenebisimide (PBI) H-aggregates, revealing the formation of excimer and delocalized radical anion states in the excited state. The intermolecular interactions between PBI units induce the formation of these new excited states, and specific Raman modes can be crucial indicators for coherent exciton dynamics in the aggregates. Additionally, analysis using time-resolved impulsive stimulated Raman scattering provides insights into the vibrational coherences associated with the formation of these states in each aggregate system.

Enhancement of Red Thermally Assisted Fluorescence in Bottlebrush Block Copolymers

Alexander M. Polgar et al.

Summary: Four topologically distinct polymers were examined for red thermally assisted fluorescence emission, with the bottlebrush block architecture showing the most efficient results. Rapid energy transfer from sensitizer to acceptor while minimizing emission quenching interactions was achieved by separating sensitizer and acceptor monomers into discrete nanoscale domains. This work demonstrates the viability of nanosegregation in engineering donor-acceptor architectures for efficient thermally assisted fluorescence.
