Bio-Based Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles from Waste Agricultural Biomass and Its Antimicrobial Activity

Katarzyna Wolny-Koladka et al.

Summary: The problem of cleaning and disinfecting surfaces has become extremely important in the context of the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic. Silver nanoparticles may be an interesting alternative to the commonly used surface cleaners and disinfectants due to their antimicrobial activity. This study evaluated the bactericidal properties of silver nanoparticles obtained using a biogenic method with plant waste biomass. The results showed strong antimicrobial effects of the biogenic nanosilver, making it a potential component for washing and disinfection agents for public utility surfaces.

Effects of Multi-Species Microbial Inoculants on Early Wheat Growth and Litterbag Microbial Activity

Jonas Hett et al.

Summary: The use of microbial consortia with complementing features is a promising method for sustainable crop intensification. This study found that the application of microbial consortia had no effect on wheat growth in heated soil, but significantly increased shoot and root biomass as well as nitrogen uptake in unheated soil. Soil heating was found to have clear effects on microbial activity.

Fermentation Strategies to Improve Soil Bio-Inoculant Production and Quality

Maria Vassileva et al.

Summary: The application of plant beneficial microorganisms as an efficient alternative to chemical fertilizers and pesticides has gained wide acceptance. However, while isolation and selection of efficient microorganisms are well studied, the focus on the production stage and formulation of final products is lacking, leading to unstable and inconsistent results in the field. A more integrated view on soil inoculants with emphasis on the inoculant production process is needed for further development of fermentation strategies for biofertilizer production.

Stressed out: Bacterial response to high salinity using compatible solute biosynthesis and uptake systems, lessons from Vibrionaceae

Gwendolyn J. Gregory et al.

Summary: Bacteria have evolved mechanisms to adapt to changes in osmolarity, with some species thriving in high salinity environments. Most bacteria in high salinity environments maintain cell turgor pressure through the biosynthesis and uptake of compatible solutes. The osmotic stress response mechanisms and regulation in marine heterotrophic bacteria are still poorly understood.
