Rapid identification of the invasive Small hive beetle (Aethina tumida) using LAMP

Sally Ponting et al.

Summary: The research developed a fast and sensitive method for detecting small hive beetle using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay, which could detect the beetle accurately within 30 minutes without cross-reacting with non-target species. This tool allows rapid screening of suspect beetle specimens and effective monitoring of potential exotic pests.

Analysis of honey environmental DNA indicates that the honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) trypanosome parasite Lotmaria passim is widespread in the apiaries of the North of Italy

Anisa Ribani et al.

Summary: In this study, an axenic culture of Lotmaria passim from Italian isolates was established and used for subsequent analyses on environmental DNA (eDNA) to detect the trypanosomatid, which showed a high prevalence rate in honey samples collected from the North of Italy.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
