Robotic versus conventional laparoscopic technique for the treatment of left-sided colonic diverticular disease: a systematic review with meta-analysis

Giuseppe Giuliani et al.

Summary: Based on the analysis of 4177 patients, it was found that robotic surgery offers significant advantages over laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of diverticular disease, with a lower conversion rate and shorter hospital stay.

Robotic assistance is technically superior to conventional laparoscopy in hemicolectomies

Summary: The study demonstrates that robotic assistance provides superior visualization and more dynamic assistance in hemicolectomies compared to conventional laparoscopy. While showing a technical advantage, it does not necessarily result in superior clinical outcomes.

Laparoscopic versus robotic-assisted, left-sided colectomies: intra- and postoperative outcomes of 683 patients

Joern-Markus Gass et al.

Summary: Robotic-assisted laparoscopy and laparoscopic surgery have similar intra- and postoperative outcomes in left-sided colectomies, with similar rates of anastomotic leakages. Although robotic-assisted surgeries have longer operative times, they have lower conversion rates to open surgery.

Comparison of health-care utilization and expenditures for minimally invasive vs. open colectomy for benign disease

Summary: This study compared the healthcare utilization and expenditures of open versus minimally invasive colectomy for benign disease. The findings indicate that minimally invasive surgery is associated with lower healthcare expenditures and less resource utilization compared to the open approach.

Robotic versus laparoscopic colorectal surgery in elderly patients in terms of recovery time: a monocentric experience

Giuseppe Palomba et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the perioperative outcomes of robotic colorectal surgery compared to laparoscopic surgery in patients older than 65 years. It found that the robotic group had shorter recovery and length of hospital stay in left hemicolectomy, rectum, and rectosigmoid procedures, with similar oncological outcomes but longer operation times.

Minimally invasive right versus left colectomy for cancer: does robotic surgery mitigate differences in short-term outcomes?

Yosef Nasseri et al.

Summary: Comparing short-term outcomes of laparoscopic and robotic right colectomies (RC) and left colectomies (LC) for cancer, the study found that RC patients had higher overall postoperative complications, but no significant differences in other outcome variables. Multivariate analysis showed no significant difference in overall complications, with laparoscopic surgery having a 2.5 times higher likelihood of complications compared to robotic surgery. In the sub-analysis of robotic cases, there were no significant differences among all outcome variables. The study suggests that robotic surgery may help reduce the previously reported outcome differences between laparoscopic RC and LC for cancer.

Summary: The study found that the use of robotic surgery in colon surgery is increasing, with clinical outcomes equivalent or superior to laparoscopic surgery. However, robotic surgery has longer operating room times and higher costs.

Single-incision robotic colectomy versus single-incision laparoscopic colectomy: A matched case control study

Tung-Cheng Chang et al.

Summary: The study compared the short-term outcomes of SIRC and SILC, showing no significant differences in terms of operative time, estimated blood loss, complications, length of postoperative hospital stay, and number of harvested lymph nodes between the two surgical methods. In anterior resection, SIRC had a slightly lower number of harvested lymph nodes compared to SILC.

Average treatment effect of robotic versus laparoscopic rectal surgery for rectal cancer

Leonardo Solaini et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the potential impact of robotic surgery on patients with rectal cancer compared to laparoscopic surgery. Results showed a potential 6.1% reduction in conversion rate if all procedures were done robotically, with no significant differences in other post-operative variables.
