Using Daily Nighttime Lights to Monitor Spatiotemporal Patterns of Human Lifestyle under COVID-19: The Case of Saudi Arabia

Mohammed Alahmadi et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the human lifestyle in Saudi Arabia, with reduced nighttime light brightness during the pandemic periods, particularly during the closure of mosques and implementation of curfews. Subsequent slight improvements were observed during Ramadan and Eid Alfiter, indicating an increase in household light usage. The closures of the two holy mosques in Makkah and Madinah also affected the human lifestyle in these cities as well as Umrah pilgrims both domestically and internationally. The study confirms the importance of considering the social and cultural context of each country when interpreting the impacts of COVID-19.

Assessing Light Pollution Using POI and Luojia1-01 Night-Time Imagery From a Quantitative Perspective at City Scale

Fei Zhao et al.

Summary: This study focuses on analyzing the influence of light pollution on human settlement environments using night-time light images and city's point of interest data. A novel analysis method is proposed, which quickly provides detailed light pollution analysis at a fine spatial scale. By assessing two medium-size cities in China, the method effectively identifies light pollution sources, pollution levels for each residence, and various pollution patterns, demonstrating its efficiency in analyzing and illustrating detailed light pollution situations in cities.

Night-Time Light Imagery Reveals China's City Activity During the COVID-19 Pandemic Period in Early 2020

Ranyu Yin et al.

Summary: This study focused on evaluating the recovery of city activity in 17 administrative regions in China during the early 2020 COVID-19 pandemic using night-time light satellite remote sensing data. The results show a partial and spatially heterogeneous recovery of city activity after the 2020 holiday, and a better recovery after China announced its fully work resumption.

Monitoring Work Resumption of Wuhan in the COVID-19 Epidemic Using Daily Nighttime Light

Zhenfeng Shao et al.

Summary: The study found that nighttime light radiance in Wuhan decreased during the epidemic, and although it partially recovered after the lockdown was lifted, it remained below normal levels. Different urban areas showed varying patterns of radiance variation, and various functional areas were impacted by the epidemic.

Early estimates of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on GDP: a case study of Saudi Arabia

David Havrlant et al.

Summary: The study used an input-output framework to estimate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on different economic sectors and the overall GDP, with three scenarios designed to reflect the severity of the shock, its sectoral distribution, and the time needed for recovery, applied to the Saudi economy. The estimated negative impact on headline GDP in 2020 ranges from -4.8% to -9.8%, but government fiscal measures result in a positive effect with a real GDP growth of around 2.5%.
