Self-Assembly Synthesis of a [2]Catenane CoII Single-Molecule Magnet

Benjamin H. Wilson et al.

Summary: This study describes the self-assembly synthesis of an octanuclear Co-II [2]catenane with unique magnetic properties. By manipulating the synthetic conditions, a mixed-valence non-catenated rectangle can also be obtained. The work demonstrates the precise control of single-molecule magnets in complex arrangements through metallo-supramolecular chemistry.

Tuning the structure and magnetic properties via distinct pyridine derivatives in cobalt(II) coordination polymers

Dong Shao et al.

Summary: The precise modulation of the structure and magnetic properties of coordination compounds is crucial for the development of framework magnetic materials. In this study, the coordination self-assembly of a neutral cobalt(s) magnetic building block and selective organic linkers resulted in two distinct cobalt(s) coordination polymers with different magnetic anisotropy behaviors. The theoretical calculations supported the experimental results and provided insights into the magnetic exchange interaction and D values of the coordination polymers.

Summary: Introducing both tetrazine radical and azido bridges afforded two air-stable square complexes where magnetic studies revealed strong antiferromagnetic metal-radical interaction with a coupling constant of -64.7 cm(-1) in the 2J formalism in 2. Remarkably, complex 2 exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization with an effective barrier for spin reverse of 96 K at zero applied field.

The Quest for Optimal 3 d Orbital Splitting in Tetrahedral Cobalt Single-Molecule Magnets Featuring Colossal Anisotropy and Hysteresis

Christina M. Legendre et al.

Summary: Only a few four-coordinated Co2+-complexes exhibit single-molecule magnet properties, with magnetic anisotropy strongly correlated with structural distortion towards linear coordination. By synthesizing and analyzing significantly distorted tetrahedral cobalt complexes, it was found that an ideal bite angle in the range of 76-78 degrees maximizes magnetic anisotropy. Ab initio calculations supported the experimental results, highlighting the importance of understanding magneto-structural correlations for the development of better SMMs.

Modulation of Magnetic Anisotropy and Exchange Interaction in Phenoxide-Bridged Dinuclear Co(II) Complexes

Ajit Kumar Kharwar et al.

Summary: We report a new class of four dimeric Co(II) complexes with different coordination geometry of two Co(II) centers and their magnetic study. Interestingly, the two Co(II) centers show two different types of magnetic anisotropy. Ab initio calculations reveal that the six-coordinate Co(II) center possesses a consistently large negative axial zero-field splitting parameter, while the four-coordinate Co(II) center exhibits a range of D values. All the complexes display rare ferromagnetic interaction, and the strength of this interaction decreases as the ligand field on the pseudo-tetrahedral Co(II) center decreases.

A reaction-coordinate perspective of magnetic relaxation

Cassidy E. Jackson et al.

Summary: Understanding and utilizing the dynamic quantum properties of metal ions is crucial for next generation technologies, with magnetic relaxation being a key physical phenomenon that is often overlooked in undergraduate coursework. By introducing a new paradigm and utilizing reaction-coordinate diagrams, researchers can better understand the mechanisms of magnetic relaxation in metal complexes and how design choices impact relaxation times. This review highlights how principles from inorganic chemistry can also be applied to the study and manipulation of magnetic relaxation, pushing the boundaries of this field.

Summary: Two Co-II based complexes with distinct structures and magnetic properties were synthesized and characterized.
