Effects of extracellular organic matter on chitosan coagulation-microfiltration harvesting of Microcystis flos-aquae

Xiaomiao Zang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of extracellular organic matter (EOM) on coagulation-microfiltration of Microcystis cells. The results showed that the presence of EOM decreased the filtration performance due to electrostatic adsorption and/or bridging between EOM and chitosan, resulting in a loose floc structure and high compressibility of the cake layer. Additionally, interception of EOM in the cake layer contributed to membrane fouling.

Monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms and assessing polymer-enhanced microfiltration and ultrafiltration for microcystin removal in an Italian drinking water treatment plant*

Cagri Akyol et al.

Summary: Monitoring and experiments in a drinking water treatment plant in Central Italy showed that using polymer(chitosan)-enhanced microfiltration (PEMF) and ultrafiltration (PEUF) can effectively remove cyanobacterial cells and microcystin, achieving removal rates of over 90% to 99%. The results demonstrate the potential of chitosan-based methods for removing cyanobacteria and toxins in drinking water sources.

Application of ultra-low concentrations of moderately-hydrophobic chitosan for ultrafiltration membrane fouling mitigation

Min Hu et al.

Summary: The study introduced a strategy for fouling mitigation in ultrafiltration (UF) water treatment by applying an ultra-low concentration of moderately-hydrophobic chitosan (MHC) and using a mildly elevated backwash temperature. The MHC-based UF system showed superior performance under optimal conditions, reducing reversible fouling by approximately 55% and irreversible fouling by about 80%, while also improving effluent quality. The additional cost of MHC dosing and backwash water heating was estimated to be low, making the MHC-based process a potential feasible and cost-effective approach for UF fouling control.

The structural and functional properties of polysaccharide foulants in membrane fouling

Xianghao Meng et al.

Summary: The spatial configuration of polysaccharide foulant is significant in membrane fouling, controlling the resistance of gel layer formed on the membrane. Polysaccharides with different properties show distinct fouling mechanisms in accordance with Hermia's models. Cations may change the interaction of polysaccharide foulant, leading to structural changes in the gel layer.
