Unexpected and frustrating transformations of double-decker silsesquioxanes

Monika Rzonsowska et al.

Summary: The study revealed unexpected Si-O-Si cage reorganization and intramolecular homocoupling product formation during hydrolytic condensation and silylative coupling procedures in DDSQ chemistry. The possible mechanism of this transformation was proposed and confirmed through NMR, FT-IR, X-ray, and TGA techniques. These findings represent the first comprehensive investigation in the chemistry of DDSQs.

Small multiamine molecule enabled fire-retardant polymeric materials with enhanced strength, toughness, and self-healing properties

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: The combination of high fire retardancy, high strength, and great toughness, as well as good healability, is crucial for the successful applications of polymeric materials. Inspired by the nano confinement effect of spider silk, a multifunctional small molecule, HCPA, is designed to serve as a fire retardant and hydrogen-bond crosslinker for PVA. Adding 5.0 wt% of HCPA enables PVA to achieve self-extinguishment, high tensile strength, and toughness, with over 90% healing efficiency.

Double-Decker Silsesquioxanes Self-Assembled in One-Dimensional Coordination Polymeric Nanofibers with Emission Properties

Julia Duszczak et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed an effective protocol for synthesizing novel double-decker silsesquioxanes and utilizing them as nanocage ligands to promote the formation of one-dimensional coordination polymeric nanofibers with transition metals ions. The ultraviolet-promoted and reversible E-Z isomerization can be exploited to tune the emission properties, making these complexes promising candidates for applications in materials chemistry. This is the first example of 1D coordination polymers bearing DDSQ-based nodes with TM ions.
