Electron capture in stars

K. Langanke et al.

Summary: Electron capture on nuclei is crucial in the dynamics of astrophysical objects, with capture rates derived from perturbation theory. Recent progress in experimental techniques and nuclear models has greatly improved our understanding of stellar electron capture rates and their impact on various astrophysical phenomena.

Heating in Magnetar Crusts from Electron Captures

Nicolas Chamel et al.

Summary: This study suggests that the persistent heat of magnetars and their outbursts may be caused by exothermic electron captures and pycnonuclear fusions. The sensitivity of heat source locations to magnetic field strength provides a new way to probe the internal magnetic field of magnetars. The findings support the idea that electron captures and pycnonuclear fusion reactions could be a viable heating mechanism in magnetars.

Evolution of β-decay half-lives in stellar environments

A. Ravlic et al.

Summary: Study conducted on beta-decay properties of nuclei under varying temperature and density conditions reveals that beta-decay half-lives increase with higher density, while generally decrease with increasing temperature. The importance of including de-excitation transitions in the calculation of beta-decay half-lives at finite-temperatures is also highlighted. Comparing results with shell-model calculations shows reasonable agreement on the temperature dependence of beta-decay rates.

Impact of complex many-body correlations on electron capture in thermally excited nuclei around 78Ni

Elena Litvinova et al.

Summary: This study links complex many-body correlations to electron capture during star evolution, utilizing finite-temperature response theory to calculate electron capture rates for spin-isospin transitions. The results show that correlations beyond the thermal quasiparticle random phase approximation significantly increase electron capture rates under typical thermodynamical conditions.
