Greywater characteristics, impacts, treatment, and reclamation using adsorption processes towards the circular economy

Mahdieh Khajvand et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the remediation of greywater using adsorption processes and highlights the reclamation of greywater in the context of the circular economy. The paper summarizes the characteristics of greywater, potential risks associated with it, and the properties of reclaimed water according to regulations or guidelines. It also discusses various aspects of the adsorption process and illustrates the removal of different pollutants from greywater using different adsorbents, as well as the techno-economic aspects.

Nitrogen removal from poultry slaughterhouse wastewater in anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic combined reactor: Integrated effect of recirculation rate and hydraulic retention time

Carla Limberger Lopes et al.

Summary: The study evaluated nitrogen removal from slaughterhouse wastewater in an anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic combined reactor, with the integrated effect of recirculation rate and hydraulic retention time. The highest performance was achieved with a recirculation rate of 2 and hydraulic retention time of 11 hours, resulting in NH4+ and TN removals of 84% and 65% respectively.

Regeneration of activated carbon adsorbent by anodic and cathodic electrochemical process

Danilo H. S. Santos et al.

Summary: The study found that electrochemical treatment is efficient in restoring the adsorption capacity of activated carbon, particularly under cathodic current conditions. Through cyclic experiments, it was discovered that activated carbon maintains high adsorption capacity after electrochemical regeneration. The analysis indicates that electrochemical regeneration is an economical and environmentally friendly technique suitable for multiple water treatment cycles.

Combined treatment of high-strength fresh leachate from municipal solid waste landfill using coagulation-flocculation and fixed bed upflow anaerobic filter

Chejarla Venkatesh Reddy et al.

Summary: This research study investigates the coagulation-flocculation process followed by biological treatment. Two landfill simulated reactors were used to simulate different operation modes, and the removal efficiency of COD in the anaerobic filter was examined. The results indicate that there was no significant COD removal in the anaerobic filter through conventional methods. It is recommended to provide a microbial source for biomass growth to improve the efficiency of the anaerobic filter.

Modeling and optimization of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) system treating blackwaters

Riccardo Boiocchi et al.

Summary: In this study, a new mathematical dynamic model describing the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) has been developed, which incorporates both the biological processes and the transport of sludge particles related to the UASB treatment of blackwater. The model shows good compatibility with experimental measurements, predicting the biogas and methane gas flow rates, effluent COD, volatile fatty acids, pH, and sludge bed volume accurately.

Irreversible inactivation of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and its genes in water by photo-electro-oxidation and photo-electro-Fenton- Processes action modes

Martha I. Verbel-Olarte et al.

Summary: Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae is classified as a critical priority pathogen by the World Health Organization. Effluents from municipal wastewater treatment plants may contribute to the dissemination of K. pneumoniae. In this study, photo-electro-oxidation (PEO) and photo-electro-Fenton (PEF) processes were found to be effective in inactivating K. pneumoniae in simulated EWWTP, with PEO achieving faster inactivation and PEF showing stronger degrading action on the resistance gene.

Bench scale demonstration of greywater treatment in a 3-stage sequential process comprising anaerobic, aerobic, and vertical greenery system

Himanshu Kumar Khuntia et al.

Summary: The study shows that non-potable reuse of treated greywater in urban households in India can reduce daily freshwater consumption and provide water security. Through optimization of a 100 L/day bench-scale, 3-stage sequential greywater treatment process, high pollutant removal efficiency was achieved, meeting WHO standards for household recycling.

Treatment of wastewater effluents from Bogota - Colombia by the photo-electro-Fenton process: Elimination of bacteria and pharmaceutical

Diana Martinez-Pachon et al.

Summary: The study investigated the presence of bacteria families and pharmaceuticals in municipal wastewater effluents from Bogota, Colombia, and their treatment by the photo-electro-Fenton process. The results showed that four pharmaceuticals were found at concentrations representing an environmental risk, and various bacteria families related to water and foodborne diseases were identified in the effluents. The photo-electro-Fenton process led to a significant reduction in bacterial content and pharmaceuticals, mainly through attacks of hydroxyl and chlorine radicals.
