Development, optimization, validation and application of ultra high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry for the analysis of pyrrolizidine alkaloids and pyrrolizidine alkaloid N-oxides in teas and weeds

Haolei Han et al.

Summary: A sensitive method was developed to simultaneously detect 14 PAs/PANOs in teas and weeds using UHPLC-MS/MS. The pollution levels and patterns of PAs/PANOs were significantly different in various types of teas, suggesting that the source of PAs/PANOs in teas may be related to weeds in tea gardens.

The concerning food safety issue of pyrrolizidine alkaloids: An overview

Natalia Casado et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), including their chemical structure, classification, toxicity, risk assessment, occurrence in food, contamination paths, and the effect of food processing. PAs have been found to exhibit various toxicities, and it is important to develop sensitive analytical methods to control their occurrence in food. Although maximum concentration limits have been regulated, further research is needed to improve the risk management of these alkaloids and assess the real intake by the population.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids and beehive products: A review

Patricia Brugnerotto et al.

Summary: Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are secondary metabolites of plants, mainly found in certain plant species. These compounds can be ingested through accidental consumption of plants and their derivatives. Bees transfer pyrrolizidine alkaloids from nectar, honeydew, and pollen to honey and other beekeeping products.

The degradation and metabolism of chlorfluazuron and flonicamid in tea: A risk assessment from tea garden to cup

Hongxia Li et al.

Summary: The degradation and metabolism of chlorfluazuron and flonicamid in tea from garden to cup were investigated. The study found that the risk of chlorfluazuron intake from tea was negligible, while the intake risk of flonicamid and its metabolites was higher.
