A novel wrinkle-gradient strain sensor with anti-water interference and high sensing performance

Zhenming Chu et al.

Summary: This study developed a superhydrophobic strain sensor with gradient structure using a one-step pre-stretching method, which exhibits high sensitivity, a broad strain range, robust stability, and fast response. The gradient wrinkle structure with low surface energy allows water droplets to automatically deviate and bounce off the surface, ensuring stable sensing performance even in extreme environments.

Mechanically Matched Silicone Brain Implants Reduce Brain Foreign Body Response

Edward N. Zhang et al.

Summary: Brain implants are increasingly used for neurological disorders treatment, but the mismatch between their Young's modulus and brain tissue exacerbates the foreign body response. The study introduces mechanically matched brain implants (MMBI) made from silicone, fabricated using new methods and a dissolvable sugar shuttle for reliable implantation. MMBIs show higher neuronal density and lower FBR near the tissue-implant interface compared to traditional implants, indicating improved functionality and reliability.

Direct Growth of Highly Conductive Large-Area Stretchable Graphene

Yire Han et al.

Summary: In this study, large-area, high-quality graphene was successfully synthesized directly on thin titanium substrates using in situ plasma-assisted thermal chemical vapor deposition. The monolayer graphene exhibited excellent stretching properties and low sheet resistance, with further improved mechanical and electronic performances achieved through in situ multi-stacking. The four-layered graphene multi-stack demonstrated ultralow resistance and high hole mobility in graphene-field effect transistors on flexible substrates.

Cohabiting Plant-Wearable Sensor In Situ Monitors Water Transport in Plant

Yangfan Chai et al.

Summary: This study presents a flexible electronic sensor that can coexist harmlessly with plants and continuously monitor the stem sap flow, contributing to plant health analysis, water consumption, and nutrient distribution. The sensor, with its light, soft, air/water/light-permeable design, enables continuous and non-destructive plant monitoring, showing great potential in phenotyping research. Additionally, the real-time investigation on watermelon stem flow revealed a previously unknown day/night shift pattern of water allocation between fruit and its adjacent branch.

Direct Characterization of Thermal Nonequilibrium between Optical and Acoustic Phonons in Graphene Paper under Photon Excitation

Hamidreza Zobeiri et al.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is used to measure thermophysical properties of 2D materials, with recent studies indicating a strong thermal nonequilibrium between optical and acoustic phonons. A novel approach combining electrothermal and optothermal techniques was used to directly characterize this phenomenon for the first time. The study highlights the importance of considering optical-acoustic phonon thermal nonequilibrium in Raman-based thermal characterization.
