Modeling multi-scale data via a network of networks

Shawn Gu et al.

Summary: In this study, the prediction of node and graph labels in network science tasks is explored. The integration of a "network of networks" (NoNs) representation is proposed. Experimental results using synthetic and biological NoNs show that our NoN approaches outperform other methods in accuracy, indicating the importance of data integration through NoNs for entity label prediction.

Contact network models matching the dynamics of the COVID-19 spreading

Matus Medo

Summary: The study suggests that increasing exponent of distance dependence hampers epidemic spreading by reducing long-distance connections in spatial networks. The spreading dynamics is also influenced by the distance-dependence exponent, leading to a transition from exponential growth to power-law growth. The observed power-law growth is consistent with recent analyses of COVID-19 spreading in many countries.

Model-informed COVID-19 vaccine prioritization strategies by age and serostatus

Kate M. Bubar et al.

Summary: The study found that prioritizing the vaccine for adults aged 20 to 49 can minimize the number of cases, while prioritizing the vaccine for adults over 60 can minimize mortality and years of life lost. Redirecting vaccine doses to seronegative individuals through individual-level serological tests can improve the impact of each dose.

Digital proximity tracing on empirical contact networks for pandemic control

G. Cencetti et al.

Summary: Digital contact tracing is increasingly recognized as a tool to control infectious disease outbreaks, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors present a modeling framework based on high-resolution contact data to analyze the impact of digital contact tracing apps. Results suggest that isolation and tracing can help control re-emerging outbreaks under specific conditions.

Dynamic prioritization of COVID-19 vaccines when social distancing is limited for essential workers

Jack H. Buckner et al.

Summary: Given the limited supply of COVID-19 vaccines, it is crucial to prioritize vaccination across different age and essential worker groups to achieve public health goals, such as minimizing infections and deaths. Depending on the objectives, the prioritization order may vary, with older essential workers typically targeted first but younger essential workers or seniors prioritized based on the goal of controlling spread or mortality. Various factors such as vaccine effectiveness, supply, transmission rate, and initial infections magnitude can influence the optimal prioritization strategy.

Modeling partial lockdowns in multiplex networks using partition strategies

Adria Plazas et al.

Summary: This study introduces a network approach to simulate the implementation of partial lockdowns to reduce the outbreak of epidemics and minimize the economic costs associated with such measures. It is found that different types of restrictions on social interactions help maintain the benefits of the network partition, while unconstrained social interactions dramatically increase the spread of epidemics.

A systematic framework of modelling epidemics on temporal networks

Rory Humphries et al.

Summary: This study introduces a modelling framework for epidemic spreading on temporal networks, from which both individual-based and pair-based models can be derived. The proposed pair-based model is an improvement over existing edge-centric descriptions, offering a concise and simple alternative. By shifting the focus from individual-based to pair-based quantities, exact modelling of Markovian epidemic processes on temporal tree networks is possible.

Effect of manual and digital contact tracing on COVID-19 outbreaks: a study on empirical contact data

A. Barrat et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the importance of combining manual contact tracing and digital contact tracing to effectively mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic and reduce societal costs. The findings show a linear relationship between the fraction of contacts recalled during MCT and app adoption rate, with the effect being quadratic, highlighting the potential for significant cost reductions if app adoption and MCT efficiency are sufficiently high.

Graph modelling for tracking the COVID-19 pandemic spread

Rasim Alguliyev et al.

Summary: The article explores graph-based modelling of the COVID-19 infection spread, analyzing factors like social distance, duration of contact, and demographic characteristics. By visualizing the spread process from the first confirmed case to human transmission, the graph model allows for considering multiple factors and conducting numerical experiments effectively. This approach enables a reverse analysis of the spread, identifying undetected cases based on social distance and contact duration, reducing uncertainty in the process.
