Valley-Polarized Quantum Anomalous Hall State in Moire MoTe2/WSe2 Heterobilayers

Ying-Ming Xie et al.

Summary: Moire heterobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are ideal for simulating the single-band Hubbard model and interesting correlated phases have been observed in these systems. Recent research has shown that topologically nontrivial states can be observed in heterobilayers, in which pseudomagnetic fields induced by lattice relaxation play a crucial role.

Quantum anomalous Hall effect from intertwined moire bands

Tingxin Li et al.

Summary: This study reveals the observation of quantum anomalous Hall effect in AB-stacked MoTe2/WSe2 moire heterobilayers, which exhibits unique band topology characteristics. At half band filling, quantized Hall resistance and vanishing longitudinal resistance are observed, indicating a topological phase transition induced by an out-of-plane electric field.

Imaging moire flat bands in three-dimensional reconstructed WSe2/WS2 superlattices

Hongyuan Li et al.

Summary: Scanning tunnelling spectroscopy and ab initio simulations have revealed a strong 3D buckling reconstruction and large in-plane strain redistribution in WSe2/WS2 moire heterostructures, leading to remarkably narrow and highly localized K-point moire flat bands. These findings contradicted previous simplified theoretical models but were in quantitative agreement with ab initio simulations capturing the full 3D structural reconstruction, highlighting the dominance of strain redistribution and 3D buckling in determining the effective moire potential in TMD heterostructures.

Imaging local discharge cascades for correlated electrons in WS2/WSe2 moire superlattices

Hongyuan Li et al.

Summary: Transition metal dichalcogenide moire heterostructures provide an ideal platform for studying the extended Hubbard model, where long-range Coulomb interactions are crucial. A scanning tunnelling microscopy technique is described for sensing and manipulating correlated electrons in gated WS2/WSe2 moire superlattice, allowing experimental extraction of fundamental extended Hubbard model parameters. This technique enables imaging and manipulation of the charge state of correlated electrons at local moire sites.

Interaction-Driven Filling-Induced Metal-Insulator Transitions in 2D Moire Lattices

Haining Pan et al.

Summary: This study develops a theory for the transition from interaction-driven correlated insulators to conducting metals in twisted WSe2 materials by tuning the filling factor around commensurate fractional fillings of the moire unit cell in the 2D honeycomb lattice. Metallic states are found slightly away from half-filling, as recently observed experimentally. Stabilities, magnetic properties, and experimental signatures of resulting insulating and metallic phases are discussed, along with the nature of correlated insulator states at rational fractional fillings.

Flat band properties of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homo- and heterobilayers of MoS2, MoSe2, WS2 and WSe2

V. Vitale et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the electronic structure of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homo- and heterobilayers, exploring the flat band properties and revealing the correlation between chemical composition, twist angle, and electronic band structure. Classical force fields were used to determine the relaxed atomic structure of the twisted bilayers, while a tight-binding model parameterized from first-principles density-functional theory was employed to calculate the electronic band structure. The highest valence bands in these systems were found to originate from either Gamma-point or K/K'.

Generalized Wigner crystallization in moire materials

Bikash Padhi et al.

Summary: Recent experiments have observed insulating states at fractional occupancy of moire bands in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials WSe2/WS2, which were conceived as generalized Wigner crystals (GWCs). Analysis based on system parameters suggests MoSe2 in homobilayers and MoSe2/WSe2 or MoS2/WS2 in heterobilayers are the best candidates for realizing GWCs. Formation of hole crystals is easier than electron crystals, and bilayer moire systems are far from the Mott insulating regime at typical operating densities.
