3D finite element analysis of effects of twin stacked tunnels at different depths and with different construction sequence on a piled raft

Mukhtiar Ali Soomro

Summary: The study found that twin stacked tunnels have significant impacts on the settlement and tilting of piled rafts, and different construction sequences lead to different outcomes. The first tunnel causes load transfer from the raft to the piles, while the second tunnel increases the load taken by the raft.

Performance of Existing Piled Raft and Pile Group due to Adjacent Multipropped Excavation: 3D Centrifuge and Numerical Modeling

Charles W. W. Ng et al.

Summary: The study conducted three-dimensional centrifuge model tests and numerical simulations to investigate the response of existing 2x2 piled rafts and elevated pile groups when subjected to adjacent deep excavations in dry sand. It was found that stress release and soil movement caused by excavation resulted in different responses for piled rafts and pile groups, with the former experiencing a higher relative settlement and load transfer from raft to embedded piles. Additionally, 30% additional pile bending moment was induced due to excavation.

Horizontal mechanical responses of single pile due to urban tunnelling in multi-layered soils

Liqiang Cao et al.

Summary: This paper presents a theoretical method for investigating the horizontal mechanical responses of single piles in multi-layered soils during tunnel construction. The study found that soil stratification plays a significant role in the mechanical responses of the pile.

Centrifuge and theoretical study on tunnel-raft interaction in clay

Jian Yu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the settlement and strain profiles of rafts of different rigidities due to tunnelling using centrifuge model tests. A simplified method based on elastic-continuum theory was proposed to predict the effects on raft settlement. Parametric studies revealed that the original deflection ratio could not fully capture the characteristics of raft settlement, leading to a proposed modified deflection ratio for better characterization.

Influence of water-rich tunnel by shield tunneling on existing bridge pile foundation in layered soils

Huang Kan et al.

Summary: The study found that the calculated values are small when groundwater effects are not considered; under fluid-soil interaction, the soil above the excavation face has a faster seepage velocity than the surrounding soil, and after shield passing, the groundwater shows a U-shaped flow trend on the ground surface supplying water to the upper part of the tunnel; the vertical displacement of the pile is constrained by the horizontal position of the tunnel's top, causing the upper pile to settle and the lower pile to deform upward.

Comparative Study on Grouting Protection Schemes for Shield Tunneling to Adjacent Viaduct Piles

Kan Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that setting grouting protection walls next to shield tunnels can effectively reduce the displacement of existing piles, with better results when the grouting depth is below 3 meters. Using L-shaped grouting protection walls can effectively reduce the longitudinal displacement of piles.

Effects of Different Construction Sequences on Ground Surface Settlement and Displacement of Single Long Pile due to Twin Paralleled Shield Tunneling

Kan Huang et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that different construction sequences of twin paralleled shield tunneling can substantially affect pier settlement, ground surface settlement, and pile displacement. Choosing the appropriate construction sequence can effectively reduce settlement of structures and vertical and horizontal displacement of pile foundations.
