On High and Extreme Wind Calibration Using ASCAT

Hurricane eye morphology extraction from SAR images by texture analysis

Evaluation of parametric wind models for more accurate modeling of storm surge: a case study of Hurricane Michael

Summary: A numerical modeling study was conducted to simulate storm surge during Hurricane Michael in 2018, using the ADCIRC hydrodynamic model with high-resolution mesh. Two parametric wind models, Holland 1980 and Holland 2010, were evaluated for their accuracy in predicting storm surge, with results showing errors between 1% and 3.7% for maximum water levels in Mexico Beach. The study suggests that the Holland 1980 wind model with a 64-knot wind speed radius for parameter estimation produced the lowest error of 1%.

An Improved Asymmetric Hurricane Parametric Model Based on Cross-Polarization SAR Observations

Summary: Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is proven to be a useful tool for monitoring hurricane structure and intensity, particularly for obtaining high-resolution hurricane wind field. An improved asymmetric hurricane parametric (IMAHP) model is proposed in this article, using high-resolution cross-polarization SAR imagery to reconstruct asymmetric wind speed accurately. The IMAHP model shows promising results compared to traditional models, with the wind speed estimation close to SAR-retrieved data.
