Stabilization of ultrathin nanowires by self-assembly into bundles

Simon Bettscheider et al.

Summary: The relative tendency of freely dispersed and bundled gold nanowires to break up along their length by the Rayleigh-Plateau instability is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Small angle X-ray scattering, in combination with transmission electron microscopy, reveals that the bundling of nanowires can enhance their stability. A stability map is constructed for a bundle of nanowires to display the sensitivity of the Rayleigh-Plateau instability to various factors. Stabilisation is enhanced by allowing the bundle of wires to sinter freely.

Atomic-scale simulation of nanojoining of Cu-Ag core-shell nanowires

Ran-Ran Fang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Cu-Ag core-shell nanowires can be efficiently connected by cold welding with few defects, with welding velocity and remaining deformation playing significant roles in the mechanical properties of joints. Cold welding under pressure may lead to internal compression, which can be alleviated by subsequent tensile deformation of the two heads if possible.

Gold-spiked coating of silver particles through cold nanowelding

Irene Calderon et al.

Summary: This method achieves particles composed of a segregated alloy of silver coated with gold by controlled Ostwald ripening of small gold nanoparticles on the surfaces of larger silver particles. The prepared segregated nanoalloyed colloids combine the advantages of both gold and silver without their drawbacks.
