Cockle (Anadara granosa) shells-based hydroxyapatite and its potential for defluoridation of drinking water

Stanslaus G. Mtavangu et al.

Summary: This study describes the synthesis and characterization of a hydroxyapatite-based adsorbent derived from biogenic cockle shells for defluoridation of drinking water. The synthesized HAp showed good adsorption capacity for fluoride removal and performed better than bone char. The study suggests that HAp derived from Anadara granosa shells could be a viable option for defluoridation of drinking water.

Biodegradable, physical and microbial analysis of tamarind seed starch infused eco-friendly bioplastics by different percentage of Arjuna powder

MohammanAsaduzzaman Chowdhury et al.

Summary: The rapid increase in global plastic production poses a significant threat to our health and climate. In response to the environmental issues caused by non-disposable petroleum-based plastics, researchers have been engaged in bioplastic research to create eco-friendly plastics using natural ingredients. This study aimed to develop environmentally-friendly plastics using low-cost natural resources such as tamarind and Arjuna, with properties compatible with mechanical, thermal, and antimicrobial requirements. The synthesized bioplastics were subjected to various tests including biodegradability, mechanical strength, FTIR analysis, SEM analysis, XRD analysis, thermal analysis, and antimicrobial testing. The results showed that the samples were biodegradable, with a biodegradation rate of 73% in just 30 days. The synthesized bioplastics exhibited a tensile strength of 5.23 N/mm(2), and FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of functional groups. Only a 5% weight loss was observed at temperatures above room temperature in the thermal analysis. The antibacterial test demonstrated the efficiency of the plastic against viruses.

Theoretical and surface/electrochemical investigations of walnut fruit green husk extract as effective inhibitor for mild-steel corrosion in 1M HCl electrolyte

A. R. Shahmoradi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the corrosion inhibition property of Juglone extracted from walnut green husk on mild steel samples exposed to an acid electrolyte. The results showed that the efficiency of the inhibitor increased with higher concentration and reached 95% with 800 ppm of green corrosion inhibitor after 8 hours of immersion. Additionally, the extracted GCI functioned as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor, as revealed by Tafel extrapolated polarization results.

Instrumental and thermal characterization of the sludge generated after bio-coagulation treatment (GSABT) of petroleum produced water (PW)

I. G. Ezemagu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the instrumental, thermal and settling characteristics of sludge generated after bio-coagulation treatment of petroleum produced water. Various analysis techniques were employed to examine the structure, composition and thermal stability of the sludge. The settling behavior and filterability of the sludge were also studied, demonstrating specific cake resistance and filter medium resistance. Additionally, the sludge was found to contain essential elements and could potentially be further beneficiated for economic purposes.
