Review on the catalytic effects of alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEMs) including sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium on the pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass and on the co-pyrolysis of coal with biomass

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: With the development of pyrolysis processes for converting solid biomass into upgraded biofuels and biochemicals, the catalytic effects of alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEMs) have gained increasing interest. These metals greatly affect the thermal conversion of biomass, although their effects are not fully understood. Furthermore, as coal is being used extensively for global energy demand, the need for alternative and carbon-neutral energy sources has emerged. The co-pyrolysis of biomass with coal has shown promise as a way to transition from fossil to renewable energy carriers. Magnetic sludge-based biochar derived from Fenton sludge as an efficient heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for degrading Methylene blue

Guirong Ye et al.

Summary: Fenton sludge was converted into magnetic sludge-based biochar (SMBC) which showed excellent catalytic efficiency in activating hydrogen peroxide for the oxidative removal of methylene blue. The crystal phase of Fe oxides in SMBC strongly influenced its catalytic activity, with the catalyst obtained at 800 degrees C for 1 h exhibiting the highest degradation efficiency. Free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance studies revealed the involvement of various radicals in the H2O2 system, and SMBC played a crucial role in generating .OH radicals. SMBC also showed good stability in non-aerated and aqueous conditions.
