Detection of Forest Tree Losses in Cote d'Ivoire Using Drone Aerial Images

Tiodionwa Abdoulaye Ouattara et al.

Summary: This study proposes a drone-based approach to assess intra-annual tree losses in the Bossematie classified forest in Cote d'Ivoire. The method uses a time series of aerial images acquired by drones to detect tree losses. The results indicate significant losses of trees in the forest area from November 2018 to April 2019, which have a considerable impact on biodiversity.

Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) Detection Using Coarse and High Resolution Multispectral Data

Luis Padua et al.

Summary: Efficient detection and monitoring of invasive plant species in aquatic ecosystems is crucial. This study used multispectral data with different spatial resolutions to detect water hyacinth. The results showed that the random forest classifier achieved the highest overall accuracy. The high spatial resolution of UAV data allowed for the detection of small amounts of water hyacinth, while satellite data analysis enabled the identification of water hyacinth coverage.

High-Density UAV-LiDAR in an Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forest System: Sampling Forest Inventory or Forest Inventory Based on Individual Tree Detection (ITD)

Ana Paula Dalla Corte et al.

Summary: Lidar point clouds can be effectively used in forest inventories to improve tree representation. In this study, a new approach called sampling forest inventory (SFI) was developed to fill the gap in the integrated crop-livestock-forest system. A comparison was made between SFI with circular and linear plots and individual tree detection (ITD) based on UAV-lidar point cloud data. The results showed that the SFI approach with an area of 2300 m(2) generated similar estimates as the ITD approach. This study provides guidance for selecting an optimal plot size to reduce errors and processing time.

Grain Yield Estimation in Rice Breeding Using Phenological Data and Vegetation Indices Derived from UAV Images

Haixiao Ge et al.

Summary: This study utilized a low-cost UAV platform and RF models combined with phenological data and color VIs to accurately estimate the yield of rice cultivars, demonstrating the significant improvement in model performance with the inclusion of phenological data. These findings suggest that the RF model is a cost-effective way to estimate yield in rice breeding by combining phenological data and color VIs.

Combining texture, color, and vegetation indices from fixed-wing UAS imagery to estimate wheat growth parameters using multivariate regression methods

Jiayi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explored the potential of combining various remote sensing methods to improve the estimation accuracy of wheat growth parameters based on fixed-wing UAS imagery, revealing that texture index showed stronger correlation with LAI and LDM. The random forest models that combined VIs, CIs, and TIs greatly improved the estimation accuracy of LAI and LDM, achieving validated R2 values up to 0.81 and 0.78 for LAI and LDM, respectively.
