Heat generation and a conservation law for chemical energy in Li-ion batteries

Summary: This study presents a degradation model for high-nickel positive electrode materials undergoing structural reorganisation involving oxygen loss and the formation of a disordered passivation layer. The model predicts the influence of passivation layer growth and lithium trapping on causing capacity and power fade, and identifies diffusion and reaction dominated limiting cases based on oxygen diffusion rate and passivation layer thickness.

Parametrisation and Use of a Predictive DFN Model for a High-Energy NCA/Gr-SiOx Battery

Summary: In this study, the predictive power of a parametrised DFN model for a commercial cylindrical NCA/Gr-SiOx lithium-ion cell was demonstrated. The model parameters were determined by deconstructing a fresh commercial cell and conducting electrochemical experiments. The simulations accurately predicted voltage profiles for galvanostatic discharge and drive-cycles, with deviations from measured results staying within 1%-3%. This work also introduced a novel simplified parametrisation workflow for accurately calibrating an electrochemical cell model.

Summary: The galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) is commonly used to evaluate solid-state diffusion coefficients in electrochemical systems, but existing analysis methods have limitations in validating the derived diffusion coefficients. Researchers employed a direct-pulse fitting method to interpret GITT data and found that non-ideal diffusion coefficients were significantly more accurate than ideal ones extracted using conventional methods. This study also demonstrated the validity of a single-particle approach when the modeled radius is proportional to the total volume-to-surface-area ratio of the system.
