ISPH simulations of thermosolutal convection in an annulus amongst an inner prismatic shape and outer cavity including three circular cylinders

Zehba Raizah et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the thermosolutal convection of a nanofluid inside an annulus composed of a square cavity and three circular cylinders. The results show that the radius of the circular cylinders enhances the nanofluid moments and strengths of convection flow. An increase in the Hartmann number or solid volume fraction reduces the maximum value of the streamlines. At higher Rayleigh numbers, additional buoyancy forces strengthen the temperature, concentration, and streamlines within the annulus. The average Nusselt/Sherwood numbers are also increased with an increase in the solid volume fraction or radius of the circular cylinders.

Modified dynamic boundary conditions (mDBC) for general-purpose smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH): application to tank sloshing, dam break and fish pass problems

A. English et al.

Summary: The DualSPHysics code utilizes dynamic boundary conditions for solid surfaces, providing stable and efficient numerical simulations. However, there may be a gap between fluid and solid boundaries that can decrease pressure measurement accuracy. A new method has been introduced to reduce this gap and improve pressure convergence in still water scenarios.

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulations of reef surf zone processes driven by plunging irregular waves

R. J. Lowe et al.

Summary: In this study, the mesh-free, Lagrangian particle-based numerical modelling approach Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) coupled with the mesh-based multi-layer nonhydrostatic wave-flow model SWASH was used to simulate the fine-scale hydrodynamic processes driven by irregular wave transformation over a fringing reef profile. Results showed that the SPH model was able to accurately reproduce complex free surface deformations during plunging breaking, wave spectral evolution across the reef flat, mean water levels and currents, and wave runup at the shoreline.

Eulerian-Lagrangian-Eulerian Simulations of Two-Phase Minimum Quantity Lubrication Flow in Internal Drill Bit Channels

Manuel Falcone et al.

Summary: The goal of reducing oil consumption in machining processes can be achieved through minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) while maintaining the effectiveness of the process. This study used numerical modeling and simulation to investigate the two-phase fluid dynamics of MQL for internal lubrication of a drilling process. The effects of different parameters on the cutting fluid flow quality were studied, including oil droplet diameter, mass flow rate at the channel inlet, and drill bit rotational speed.

Gede Pringgana et al.

Summary: The study found that significant reductions in total force on a structure can be achieved through strategic spatial positioning and orientation, which may mean the difference between superficial damage and wholesale structural collapse, thereby aiding in the development of more resilient building structures in tsunami-prone regions.

Cutting-fluid flow with chip evacuation during deep-hole drilling with twist drills

Andreas Baumann et al.

Summary: This study investigates the cutting fluid distribution and the chip evacuation during micro twist deep-hole drilling using 3D multi-physics simulation methods. A coupled particle simulation combining Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics and the Discrete Element Method is performed to analyze chip transport, showing large dead-zones in the flutes with minimal fluid velocity for chip evacuation. The results provide significant support for future investigations in chip transport research and process improvement.

A fluid-structure interaction model for free-surface flows and flexible structures using smoothed particle hydrodynamics on a GPU

Joseph O'Connor et al.

Summary: This paper develops a numerical model for violent hydrodynamics of free-surface flows interacting with flexible structures using the SPH method accelerated with a GPU. By addressing known deficiencies in SPH-based structural modeling and implementing a unified SPH framework, the proposed model shows good agreement with benchmark solutions and achieves significant speedups on GPUs compared to CPU versions. This indicates the proposed model is a viable and efficient approach for simulating violent free-surface fluid-structure interactions.

Summary: The study presents a SPH formulation to accurately simulate sloshing frequencies and wave motion in tanks of arbitrary shape, using a modified version of the DualSPHysics code. The SPH scheme is verified through comparisons with analytical values and experimental results, showing good agreement in predicting sloshing forces and frequencies.
