Development of cycle-to-cycle variation of the tumble flow motion in a cylinder of a spark ignition internal combustion engine with Miller cycle

Masayoshi Matsuda et al.

Summary: Reducing cycle-to-cycle variation in engine output is crucial for high-efficiency engines like lean-burn engines. This study used time-resolved particle image velocimetry measurements to investigate the cycle-to-cycle variation of in-cylinder flow during intake and compression strokes, revealing the factors that induce this variation. Correlation map analysis was effective in elucidating the relationship between flow distribution and engine performance.

Stereoscopic particle image velocimetry for engine flow measurements: Principles and applications

Mohammed El-Adawy et al.

Summary: There is an increasing demand for better understanding of the combustion processes in modern engines, with large-scale intake generated flow structures having a significant effect on combustion behavior and being widely studied. Traditional tools for assessing in-cylinder flow behavior include steady-state flow rigs and research engines with optical access. Recent developments in stereoscopic particle image velocimetry for engine flow measurements are presented and discussed.

Numerical investigation of Miller cycle with EIVC and LIVC on a high compression ratio gasoline engine

Jiangtao Xu et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of EIVC and LIVC on engine performance for a gasoline engine with a CR of 13.5 and EMVT, showing that EIVC is more preferred at high load due to its lower total power consumption and ability to improve IMEP and combustion. Meanwhile, EIVC can still adjust EGR rate sensitively at part load to reduce NOx emissions. This quantitative analysis of two Miller cycles can provide valuable reference for engine designers and researchers.
