Additively Manufactured Multi-Morphology Bone-like Porous Scaffolds: Experiments and Micro-Computed Tomography-Based Finite Element Modeling Approaches

Reza Noroozi et al.

Summary: Tissue engineering, a critical interdisciplinary field in regenerative medicine, aims to repair or replace damaged tissues using biomaterials and cell transplantation. Additive manufacturing (AM) has revolutionized the production of complex geometries, advancing bioprinting in generating biomimicking organs and tissues with required porous graded structures. This study experimentally and numerically investigates suitable triply periodic minimal surface structures for manufacturing scaffolds mimicking the heterogeneous nature of bone. The influence of printing direction and material is also explored.

Influence of proteins on mechanical properties of a natural chitin-protein composite

Devis Montroni et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that proteins play a crucial role in influencing the mechanical properties of chitin-composite materials, with protein disulfide bonds and correct folding being key factors for Young's modulus and maximum stress. Removal of the protein matrix leads to a reduction in Young's modulus and maximum stress, while structural integrity of the chitin matrix remains unchanged. The proteins act as a stiff matrix reinforced by di-sulfide bridges that link chitin fibrils, preventing them from sliding against each other.

Solvent Mediating the in Situ Self-Assembly of Polysaccharides for 3D Printing Biomimetic Tissue Scaffolds

Rongrong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new solvent consumption strategy to disrupt the thermodynamic stability of biopolymer solutions and induce self-assembly of molecule chains into nanostructures for improved printability. The resulting polysaccharide scaffolds exhibit superior performance in tissue engineering applications, showing potential for diverse applications beyond tissue engineering.

Morphology and organization of the internal shell of Ariolimax californicus (Gastropoda; Stylommatophora), an asymmetric two-face biomineralized matrix

Devis Montroni et al.

Summary: This study provides new insights into the composition and morphology of the internal shell of Ariolimax californicus. The internal shell is mainly composed of proteins and beta-chitin, organized in layers with CaCO3 crystal formation. The dorsal and ventral sides of the shell serve different purposes in calcium storage, indicating a dynamic process of biomineralization in calcium-poor environments.
