The use of soil nutrient balances in deriving forest biomass harvesting guidelines specific to region, tree species and soil type in the Netherlands

Wim de Vries et al.

Summary: The use of tree harvest residues as feedstock for bioenergy has raised concerns about potential adverse effects on soil fertility, especially on poor sandy soils. Nutrient balance calculations suggest that depletion of certain nutrients is more likely to occur in poorer soils, highlighting the importance of considering soil type in forest biomass harvesting guidelines.

Critical biomass harvesting indicator for whole-tree extraction does not reflect the sensitivity of Swedish forest soils

Stefan Lofgren et al.

Summary: There is a growing societal demand to increase the use of forest biomass for substitution of fossil fuels, but the Critical Biomass Harvesting (CBH) indicator is criticized for not accounting for all relevant processes and exaggerating sensitivity, correlating poorly to actual forest soil conditions. It is suggested that the risk assessment and policy implications for forest biomass harvesting guidelines need to be based on solid scientific methods and data availability may not allow the indicator to be calculated at a high enough spatial resolution for forest management advice.

A Combined Measurement and Modelling Approach to Assess the Sustainability of Whole-Tree Harvesting-A Swedish Case Study

Cecilia Akselsson et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between acid neutralizing capacity and critical biomass harvesting exceedance at 26 sites in Sweden, dividing the sites into risk classes. The high risk class was found to be concentrated in southern Sweden, attributed to higher historical sulfur deposition and site productivity in the region.

Sustainable forest biomass: a review of current residue harvesting guidelines

Brian D. Titus et al.

Summary: Forest biomass harvesting guidelines are essential for ensuring the ecological sustainability of forest residue harvesting for bioenergy and bioproducts, contributing to the social acceptance of a growing bioeconomy. Comprehensive reviews of existing guidelines can aid in the development of new guidelines or the revision of existing ones, taking into account factors such as local or regional context, jurisdictional compatibility with regulations, and incorporation of appropriate scientific information.

Cycling and retention of nitrogen in European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) ecosystems under elevated fructification frequency

Rainer Brumme et al.

Summary: Excessive nitrogen deposition in forest ecosystems in Germany has led to accelerated plant growth, increased internal nitrogen cycling, and enhanced retention of nitrogen in soil and plant compartments. The impact of European beech fructification on nitrogen fluxes is not well understood, with limited research on the frequency of mast events and their effects on nitrogen cycling. Further research is needed to understand the role of mast products in nitrogen retention in forest ecosystems.
