The Role of T Lymphocytes in Cutaneous Scarring

Walker D. Short et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the immune system plays a crucial role in the formation of cutaneous scarring, particularly T cells and their cytokines. Despite ongoing progress in the field, there is minimal advancement in modulating immune responses to enhance overall aesthetic outcomes of wound healing.

A human skin equivalent burn model to study the effect of a nanocrystalline silver dressing on wound healing

J. D. Iljas et al.

Summary: This study established a 3D deep burn wound model using human skin equivalent (HSE) and compared it to native skin. The HSE model demonstrated re-growth and formation of neo-epidermis after burn injury, while native skin did not. The model is effective for studying burn wound pathology and treatment.

Construction of tissue-engineered skin with rete ridges using co-network hydrogels of gelatin methacrylated and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate

Zhizhong Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, photocurable gelatin methacrylated (GelMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) co-network hydrogels with different concentrations were prepared and characterized. A human skin model with rete ridges microstructure was successfully created using 10%GelMA-2%PEGDA hydrogel, showing excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and accelerated wound healing. This study provides a simple and powerful way to mimic the structures of human skin for skin tissue engineering and wound healing.

Fibroageing: An ageing pathological feature driven by dysregulated extracellular matrix-cell mechanobiology

Moises Selman et al.

Summary: Ageing is a complex biological process involving multiple factors that lead to a decline in physiological functions and an increased risk of chronic diseases. Inflammageing and fibrotic pathways play key roles in age-related morbidities and the accumulation of extracellular matrix in the elderly. The concept of Fibroageing suggests that stiff ECM and activation of fibrotic positive feedback loops contribute to various age-related alterations.

Collagen in Wound Healing

Shomita S. Mathew-Steiner et al.

Summary: Normal wound healing progresses through inflammatory, proliferative and remodeling phases, with collagen playing a key role in regulating these phases. Impairments in wound healing can lead to chronic non-healing wounds, where collagen has been utilized as an adjunct therapy to promote healing.

Reconstituting the dynamics of endothelial cells and fibroblasts in wound closure

Juliann B. Tefft et al.

Summary: The researchers developed an in vitro system to study how human endothelial and stromal cells respond during wound healing and granulation tissue formation in a 3D matrix. They observed that fibroblasts play a primary role in wound closure, while endothelial cells remain at the periphery of the wound.
