Breeding of Persian walnut: Aiming to introduce late-leafing and early-harvesting varieties by targeted hybridization

Summary: Late-spring frost caused by climate change is a major limiting factor in walnut production. The sustainable solution to this challenge is to breed late-leafing cultivars with desirable nut characteristics. In a breeding program conducted from 2018 to 2019, controlled crosses were made between female parents 'Persia', 'Caspian', 'Chandler', 'Pedro', and male parents 'Franquette', 'Lara', and superior genotype 35T. The results showed significant differences between cross combinations in terms of fruit set and pollen tube growth, with the highest fruit set observed in the Chandler x 35T combination. The study also found variation in leafing date among the seedlings, with early-leafing genotypes obtained from 35T as the male parent and late-leafing genotypes obtained from 'Franquette'. The goal of the breeding program is to obtain late-leafing and early-harvesting genotypes with desirable nut traits.

This study contributes to understanding factors that affect walnut micropropagation success and sets the foundation for commercial propagation of walnut clones.
