Novel Drug-Drug Multicomponent Crystals of Epalrestat- Metformin: Improved Solubility and Photostability of Epalrestat and Reduced Hygroscopicity of Metformin

Jingjing Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, drug-drug multicomponent crystals containing epalrestat and metformin were synthesized to improve the photostability and solubility of epalrestat and reduce the hygroscopicity of metformin. The strong hydrogen bonds between epalrestat and metformin molecules in the multicomponent crystals prevented the photoisomerization of epalrestat molecules and improved its photostability. Furthermore, the multicomponent crystals exhibited better solubility and lower hygroscopicity due to their layered structure with alternately arranged epalrestat and metformin molecules.
